Modern Teen Style….Valluv Creations

Today’s feature from Valluv Creations is the ideal back to school feature. This outfit is so cute and so is the model. Beyond adorable…

Valerie describes the session: “This is a Kayla, she is a young teen (13) who is chasing after her dream of being an actress & model. Her biggest dreams are, working with Johnny Depp, doing a Pixar voiceover, saving the rainforest and helping animals.

She is usually more casual with her style, so it was fun to step out of her normal clothing comfort zone, and she fell in love with this outfit. For styling we went through her closet, “My mom loves to shop, and sometimes she finds really cute things but a lot of the time they are a size to big. So they sit in my closet till they fit.” We found this cute blue dress designed by Cynthia Rowley for her Dreampop line. We paired it with a cute pair of knee high socks from target. Cute Gap Sunglasses and some black boots.”

Eye on Style | Emmy Fashion

Another award show has come and gone and now the Fashion Police get to tell us what worked and what fell flat. The stars at the Emmy’s abandoned basic black and opted for bright colors and lots of shine. Even though the leaves are turning and Fall is here, there are still ways to incorporate three hot Emmy trends into your winter wardrobe.

Elizabeth Moss looked stunning in her strapless hot pink gown at Sunday’s Emmy Awards. Hot pink is one of my faves. It’s so cheery and reminds me of cotton candy. If you’re a little leery about wearing it head-to-toe, try accessorizing with this super hot color. Buying info here.

Kerry Washington has become a style icon and she totally rocked her embellished dress Sunday night – she even made it looked light and feminine. A touch of embellishment can add sparkle, shine and texture to any outfit and accessory. It’s edgy and unexpected – especially on a boyfriend cardigan or nautical striped shirt. Get your heavy metal buying info here.

Taylor Schilling may star in “Orange is the New Black” but yellow was definitely her color on the Emmy Red Carpet. Often associated with summer and sun, yellow can brighten up a fall wardrobe. Pair a yellow sweater with jeans or top a J. Crew sweater skirt with a crisp white shirt. Buy your sunshine style pieces here.

emmy2Have fun working these Emmy trends into your closet. Until next time…

Fall Color Inspiration

Over the past two weeks I’ve been able to subtly feel the change of season in the air. There is that familiar crispness in the early mornings and late evenings that is a sure hint that the Fall season is on it’s way. I predict that in the next few weeks, as I hold session consultations for my senior, teen and tween clients, I will have an influx of fall inspiration boards full of boots, beanies, and lots of lovely layered clothing. As I put together some color inspiration boards for them, I thought it would be fun to share with the Modern Teen Style readers how I created a couple outfits using two of my favorite colors from the Pantone 2015 Fall color collection. If you haven’t seen the full collection yet, check out this awesome post where Sarah Elle covers the reveal of the latest color palette from Pantone.

There are lots of beautiful fall colors trending this year, and they are quite complimentary with each other. Two of my favorites this year are “Marsala”, a sort of burgundy-meets-wine color that speaks to the epitome of Fall, and “Oak Bluff”, a beautiful tan-meets-mustard color that happens to be, in my opinion, the perfect complimentary color to “Marsala”. Together they make that amazing combination of color you find in the Fall leaves that we all love so much. I can’t wait to wear them myself this fall season!

Have you started sorting out your 2015 fall wardrobe yet? Are you implementing colors from Pantone’s 2015 Fall collection into it? If so, we want to see what awesome combinations you’ve come up with! Message us at info@seniorstyleguide.com, or tag us on Instagram @mdernteen with the hashtags #2015pantonefallcollection & #colorinspiration. And be sure to check back daily for other fashion and photography inspiration here, on Facebook, and on Instagram! Happy Fall everyone!

Be Inspired By….| Rowan Blanchard | Eye on Fashion

This week, be inspired by….

Rowan Blanchard!

All of my teens and tweens reading this should know immediately who that is; but for the rest of you, let me give you a teeny bio:
Rowan Blanchard is the 13 year old cutie currently starring in the “Boy Meets World” spin-off “Girl Meets World.” She can also be seen in “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World” and “The Back-up Plan.” She is super adorable and has an awesome attitude; so it’s pretty safe to guess she’ll be making a splash for a while. And that’s why she is the perfect choice for this week’s Eye on Fashion “be inspired by” post!

rowan-blanchard

As you can see, a common theme in Rowan’s wardrobe choices are cap sleeves, florals, and loose waves; making all of her outfits extra sweet and something any girl of any age would want to be inspired by!

It’s a great thing Rowan loves floral prints since they’re holding strong into the Fall season. (More about that trend here.)

My favorite thing about Rowan’s style is that everything she wears is super on trend but not revealing. She shows us how you can be beautiful and in style without having to show off skin to do it. That’s someone I’m all for following in the style world, how about you?

To channel your inner Rowan, try anything with a floral print. To really hit it out of the park, add in ballet flats and look for something with a cap sleeve. And, of course, catch her on the Disney Channel to see what styles she’s wearing next!

Fashion Flash Back…Teen & Tween Lifestyle

Knee High

This Month’s FFB (Fashion Flash Back) features Knee High Socks! First made popular in the 60’s and 70’s with the birth of the shift dress and midi skirt (see this post for an awesome history on this), they were brought back briefly in the 90’s thanks to pop culture and movies like “Clueless” and “The Craft”. Now that shift dresses are back in high demand, we are seeing more and more knee socks gracing the legs of fashionista’s everywhere. T Swift is no exception! She has made it clear this year that Knee High’s are one of her favorite accessories, and has been seen rocking them on more than one occasion.

Knee High’s can make the legs look longer , especially when paired with something on the shorter side. But don’t worry, they can make a cute statement with longer garments too. Check out this portrait feature from last month to see how awesomely this tween rocked her knee highs! SO CUTE!

Shift dresses aren’t the only garment style knee highs look great with. You can pair them nicely with skater dresses and skirts, for a sort of homage to the traditional “school uniform” look. They look great with pencil skirts and midi skirts, while managing to still look professional. And they even look super cute with the right pair of shorts!

The best part about Knee Highs is that they are an inexpensive way to change up your wardrobe, and you can find them this fall in almost any clothing store!

Have you added Knee Highs to your wardrobe lately? We want to see! Post a selfie on Instagram and tag us @mderteen! Mention this post so we know you were reading! We LOVE to see our followers and what they’re wearing!

Thanks for “Flashing Back” with us, and be sure to check back each day for lots of other fun and amazing fashion tips!

Eye on Fashion |Game Day

High school football is in full swing and the big game is the social highlight of the week! It’s a “see-and-be-seen” situation and you want to look comfortable, but fashionable at the same time. Think layers of sporty styles like bomber jackets, baseball hats, boyfriend jeans and jersey-inspired t-shirts. The sequin bomber jacket from Abercrombie is the star of this ensemble, but any letter jacket or sweater is a great choice. Choose items in your school colors and your team can’t lose! Go team go!!

Fall 2015 Shoe Trends

If you haven’t had a chance to get a glimpse of the Fall 2015 Shoe Trends yet, no worries, here’s a quick summary!

2015 Fall Shoe Trends

To start off, big name designers like Prada and Michael Kors, hit fall runway with lots of mixed metallics. Silver, bronze, and gold were found gracing the feet of their models in many quirky fashions from classic Mary Janes, to boyish Oxfords. This year, they weren’t afraid of mixing their metallics, so finding a shoe with both silver and gold side by side was not uncommon.

Gucci, Fendi, and Dolce & Gabbana were rocking some crazy fun designs adorned in fur at this year’s fall runway. Some were a little over the top but made their point that shoes are meant to be a head-turning accessory. My personal favorite fur design came from Brunello Cucinelli, which was a sleek grey fur fronted wedge that would go well with so many fall fashion outfits!

Also making a notable appearance on the runway this fall, from designers like Burberry Prorsum, Etro, and Lanvin, are the slightly 70’s inspired patchwork boots. This design inlay’s different textiles and leathers in contrasting colors and textures, for a look that is literally a “walking piece of art”. Christian Dior, Marc Jacobs, and Calvin Klein went with a more subdued color scheme for their fall boot line, sticking to one solid color at a time, but making a statement by taking the boot length from knee all the way up to the daring heights of over the knee and even thigh high.

Bringing some of these high fashion trends into our closets can be both tricky and fun. It’s just a matter of being able to balance practicality with that edginess that high fashion gives us. We would LOVE to see how you are rocking some of these crazy fall fashion pieces! Just share with us by tagging @mdernteen on Instagram, and mentioning this post. Until then, happy accessorizing!

THE Power Color | Eye on Fashion | Modern Teen Style

Red.

It has been used as a silent way of asserting confidence and a sense of power over others for ages. You see it in politics, the royal family, and in branding and logos everywhere. Red is a hot color filled with subliminal messages of confidence, strength, knowledge, and power; so why not infuse that into your wardrobe and have a bit of those positive affirmations rub off on YOU?

red

Red is a gorgeous color and has many shades and hues that find their way into every season. This coming Fall season we can see it in the uber trendy marsala (read more about the hot Fall fashion colors here); but a classic mauve or burgundy is always in style – so you can’t really go wrong with a red!

Some feel that red is TOO bright or TOO aggressive (think: red pen all over your history exam- scary, right?), but really, it’s all about HOW you wear it and the confidence you exude when doing so. Add it in to your wardrobe slowly with accessories or the ever-popular red lip. Or, jump in head first with a gorgeous red dress or – even more daring – pants! You seriously cannot go wrong with a solid red addition to your outfit; so, take that color by the horns and own that confidence, baby! You got this!

Inspired By Music … Teen & Tween Lifestyle

Inspired By Lorde

This segment of “Inspired by Music” is featuring the ultra fabulous “Lorde”. She took over the music scene in 2013 when she dropped the single for “Royals”, and followed with other hits such as “Tennis Courts”, “Buzzcut Season”, and “White Teeth Teens”, drawing in fans all over with her clever teen angst lyrics and alluring dark horse style.
Lorde (Ella O’Connor) inspires us in many ways. Her music speaks to the teenage soul, and her sense of style never lets us down. She can make a basic white t-shirt look fashionable by pairing it up with the right statement necklace like she did in her Royal’s music video, or surprise us with purple lipstick and a black fishnet shirt as seen in her Tennis Courts music video. Since the release of “Yellow Flicker Beat” she has been seen in several awesome dress suits and slacks with button down shirts. A look that at first glance seems like what your mom would wear to work, but she totally rocks it with the right accessories and her wild, signature wavy locks.
We love that Lorde knows how to take the best fashion risks, and that makes her the perfect trend setter. We also love that Lorde offers even more than her penchant for style and lyrical genius. She happens to be crazy smart, and an advocate for self love, reminding all teens that body perfection doesn’t really exist, and that she herself is imperfect and real. Ella isn’t afraid to talk about her constant struggle with her acne and skin problems, and assures young teens that if she ever appears “perfect” it’s due to an awesome makeup artist!
Lorde has also chosen not to get involved in certain Hollywood social circles, feeling it is more important to not get sucked into the more unhealthy aspects of Hollywood’s glitz and glam, even turning down opportunities to perform with other artists who might not see things from her perspective. Which is something that is greatly admirable for a teen in the spotlight to do! Her healthy self image and advocating of others’, makes Lorde (Ella O’Connor) a true inspiration for teens all over the world!
We love how music inspires art and creativity, and even a healthy mind! The bloggers of Modern Teen Style, as well as myself, want to see your sessions that have been inspired by music, movies, books, or art!
Email us at info@seniorsstyleguide.com with the subject “Inspired by Shoot” for a possible feature on the blog! Help us inspire others to be creative!
