Eye on Fashion | Grammy Style

Hey guys! It’s Megan Evans from Megan Evans Photography near Baltimore, MD. I am the second-half of the “Eye on Fashion” team with the amazing Sarah Elle for 2015. I am so excited to be here and share with you my love for clothes, fashion and fun!

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE award shows. (The Oscars show is like Christmas for me!) I watch the Red Carpet of all the shows – Emmys, Golden Globes, etc., and comment on what everyone is wearing. The Grammys were just this past Sunday and the music industry did not disappoint on the Red Carpet. There were so many trends on display so I thought I’d choose a few and share how you can incorporate these trends into your own personal style!

The first up is a beauty trend I’ve always loved is a nude lip. Nude lips were a huge presence on Grammy night. Everyone from Beyonce to Rihanna had nude lips which look both natural and fabulous at the same time. It can be a matte lipstick or a shiny gloss- but nude is it! Nude lips are feminine and flirty – anyone can pull it off. They go well with dramatic eyes and rosy cheeks alike. You can find out where to buy these products by going here.

Who doesn’t love a little bling? The Grammy Red Carpet had plenty of it and it wasn’t all just glittering jewelry. Shiny dress sparkled on Katy Perry, Rita Ora and Paris Hilton to name a few. And when it comes to shine, a little goes a long way. It doesn’t have to be head-to-toe, it can be just a bodice or a skirt. And when you’ve got a lot of sparkle going on all over, remember to keep the accessories to a minimum – we don’t want to much of a good thing. Want this look? Go here for where to buy!

shiny

Another huge trend from the Grammy show was menswear. Anna Kendrick, Gwen Stefani and Sia are a few of the artists who strutted their stuff in suits, jumpsuits and oversized jackets. I’m not sure that some form of menswear has ever really gone out of style. Think of the boyfriend jean and grandpa cardigan. Not to mention the oxford shirt – what’s more stylish than a crisp white shirt?  Again, the key to pulling off the menswear trend is not to overdo it. Choose one or two pieces and accessorize with a fun hat or shiny shoes. Comfy, casual, chic! You can find shopping information here.

The last trend is what fashion bloggers are calling the update LBD (little black dress). Black doesn’t have to be boring – just ask Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj. In fact, it can be downright dramatic if done right. Add a little lace,  maybe a cutout or a an intricate back and suddenly you’re wearing more than a LBD, you’re making a fashion statement.  So choose the look that rights for you and make it your own! Teen and Tween Lifestyle – V-Day Fashion…Modern Teen Style

There’s only four more days until Valentine’s Day! Whether you’re celebrating with family and friends, or your crush, you can do it in style! Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to wear those “cutesy” fun heart prints. Most of us have one or two items hanging out in the back of the closet that we feel we just can’t get away with wearing throughout the rest of the year. If you’re worried that you wore it last year and someone might notice, just change it up! Put a cute blazer or cardigan over it, pair it with a different shoe style, and accessorize it with a fun hat or cute bag.

In my house, we have a blast finding Valentine’s inspired clothing to wear the whole week leading up to V-day. We start the week off with a simpler look by sprucing up an everyday outfit like jeans and a t-shirt with a cute heart printed scarf or hair accessory, then we work our way up to the big day with something super fun like a heart printed shirt or even a dress. It’s pretty much a contest to see who comes up with the cutest and most stylish Valentine’s Day outfit.

Here’s some fun Valentine’s Day items that I’m finding inspiring this year. I hope they get you excited about finding something awesome to wear this Saturday February 14th! Don’t you just love all of these V-day choices? From the comfy over-sized “Love” sweater and leggings, to the adorable blazer over a multi-colored heart printed shirt. These are cute enough to actually wear any day of the year!

We want to see what YOU come up with this Valentine’s Day! Take a V-day selfie and tag us on Instagram @mdernteen. Inspire others to have fun with fashion too!

Happy 2015 Valentine’s Day!

*hugs*

Eye on Fashion…Teen Guys – Urban Wear

Hi there!  My name is Melissa Waller and I am so excited to be coming to you with the newest Eye on Fashion-Teen Guys.  I have been a senior photographer for several years but just recently decided to exclusively shoot seniors in the last year.  While I have had a few senior guy clients get their senior sessions done with me, my goal for 2015 is to have at least 15 guys.  I chose urban wear for my first post, and I hope this helps you when you are trying to give advice to your male senior clients on what to wear and what style would best suit them.  Stay tuned for many more guy posts on fashion.

I absolutely love this edgy rocker/urban look.  This is a very popular look with most of the guys in the area that I live in.  A pair of black skinny jeans, rocker tshirt and a flannel shirt opens in the front or tied around the waist is very trendy.  For shoes, these black Doc Martins are a very cool option.  I also love the look of the military jacket and can be switched out with the flannel shirt to change up the look.  Add a beanie and retro rocker glasses and you’re on your way to an edgy/urban look that will look and photograph beautifully.  I would love to hear your thoughts.   Outfits brought to you by Polyvore.  If you haven’t checked out Polyvore – you should; it is a great tool to put together outfits.

Modern Teen Style…..Amber Cornell Photography

Today’s featured session comes to us from Amber Cornell Photography in Santa Clarita, CA and it is a stunner! I’m obsessed with these red lips and that flower crown is stunning.

Amber describes the session, “I wanted to do a shoot that I styled. So I had the flower headpiece made from real flowers and being that it’s fall season I knew I wanted red. Then I went shopping and found this beautiful dress from the teen section from Guess. It’s a beautiful Gold shimmer. Perfect fall colors. I wanted to do 2 locations. The first location being more on the ethereal-(snow white feel) and the second being more dreamy/ whimsical.”

Eye on Fashion | Shoes: The Ultimate Accessory

Hi!
I’m Sarah with Sarah Elle Photography and I am here to bring you the first Eye on Fashion post for Modern Teen Style for 2015 (yay!!).
I am honored to be part of the MTS team and am over the moon excited to get to share my style inspiration with you twice a month! So, grab that cute notebook and your favorite pen because I’ve got some awesome tips coming your way you won’t want to miss!

First up, I’m going to talk with you about MY favorite accessory: SHOES!

I firmly believe that shoes can make or break your entire look; so don’t let them be an afterthought when you pull together your wardrobe for your shoot! We focus so much on our clothing, our jewelry, or how our hair and makeup is going to look that we often leave which shoes we are going to wear as a last minute decision. Trust me when I say that your shoes are your ultimate accessory and are not one to be left to the final minute.

Image 3

From pumps to flats to booties, riding boots, and sneakers, your shoes make a statement. Are you casual? Fun? Adventurous? Athletic? Or maybe you are all of the above! Not every shoe goes with every outfit (or even every season) but usually when we pull together a look we find that we have multiple pairs of shoes that would go GREAT with that outfit. This is where we have a choice. What kind of statement do you want to make today?

Untitled-3

The above outfit is created from the exact same pieces – same hat, same top, exact same pair of jeans- the only difference is the shoe choice. Isn’t it neat how both give off completely different style vibes just by changing the shoe? With this outfit you’ve gone from “casual beachy fun” to “lunch date in the Hamptons!” Shoes really are the final say in your wardrobe so don’t forget to decide which statement about yourself you want to make when pulling together your outfit. While your feet are doing the walking why not let your shoes do the talking 😉

In love and fashion,
Sarah

Teen and Tween Lifestyle – Hair Tutorial …. Modern Teen Style

Hello! I’m Rey and I’m so excited to be Modern Teen Style’s new tween and teen lifestyle columnist! With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I thought I would kick off my first monthly “H&B” (Health & Beauty) post with a quick and easy Valentine’s Day hair tutorial. Whether you’re going all decked-out in full Valentine’s Day style, or if you want to add just a little touch of whimsy to a simple, everyday outfit, this super cute “do” will satisfy both.

To get started, you will need a comb, 6-10 bobby pins (depending on the thickness of your hair), and three small hair elastics.

Step #1 – This hairstyle works on both curly and straight hair. We opted for a loose curl this time, and just used a small barrel curling iron to curl the entire head of hair before we got started.

Step #2 – Part the hair down the center of the scalp. Then, gather a segment of hair from just behind the ear, meeting up to the center part. I like to use a rat tail comb to help me make a cleaner, more even part. Secure your gathered segment of hair into a small pony tail and secure with a small hair elastic.

Step #3 – Repeat on the other side of your part, creating a second pony tail. Both pony tails should mirror each other in placement on either side of the hair part.

Step #4 – Take one of your pony tails and twist loosely forward, towards the top of your head. Lay the loose twist against your head, wrapping around the base of the pony tail towards your ear. See the following diagram for the best spots to place bobby pins, to secure the twist.

Step #5 – Repeat step # 4 on the next pony tail. You should start to see a “heart” forming!

Step #6 – If your twists are too far apart to resemble the top of a heart, loosen the twists slightly and push them towards each other until it looks how you like it.

Step #7 – Take the “tail” of each remaining twist, and further twist in the same direction as above.

Step #8 – Gather both remaining ‘tail twists” and secure them with a hair elastic.

Step #9 – You can leave your twists loose or you can twist tighter, depending on what look you prefer.

Ta Da! You’ve created a heart hair twist! Isn’t it super cute?! And it’s great for all ages, so tweens and teens, you can easily rock this look!

This particular hairstyle does work best on medium or long hair, but don’t worry, at the bottom of the post I will have some other super cute hair accessories and ideas for all other hair lengths to use this Valentine’s Day.

Will you be trying this style yourself for Valentines’ Day? Do you have another awesome love-inspired “do” that we need to know about? We want to see! Follow Modern Teen Style on Instagram @mdernteen and tag us in a photo show-casing your V-day “do”.

Have an awesome Valentine’s Day whether spending it with your crush, or with the people you love most!

*hugs*

Valentine's Hair ideas

Modern Teen Style…..Valerie Ott Photography

I’m a sucker for dance sessions. And tulle skirts. And floppy hats. So this session from Valerie Ott Photography has all of my favorite things!

Valerie adds, “I was so excited when Alex’s mom called me for a session, because she wanted to capture this beautiful time in Alex’s life when it’s all about being a ballerina. I was thrilled to be able to photograph a dancer. I always say that dancers are the easiest women to photograph because they understand how their bodies move and asking them to get into positions that don’t feel natural seem very easy to them. They are probably used to contorting their bodies. But more importantly dancers connect with their bodies in ways that non-dancers do not. There is fluidity and gracefulness in their movements.

There is a wonderful dance studio in town called The Station. They have all sorts of dance classes there. But they also rent out the studio space to photographers. It was perfect for us!

At one point in the session I thought she looked like Kate Hudson, and in another pose, I thought she looked like Taylor Swift. It doesn’t really matter which celebrity she looks like, I think what does matter is that she photographs like a celebrity. We need to watch out for this girl because she is going places.

Alex is a girl with incredible grace and poise. She was so polite and full of her own opinions. I loved photographing her because she is so comfortable with herself.”

Modern Teen Style….Babe Reynolds Photography

I love group sessions. They can really offer a chance for everyone to relax and have fun. Today’s featured session from Nancy at Babe Reynolds Photography is a fun, colorful group session that really makes me miss summer!

Nancy describes the session as, “This was a session inspired by plain old fashioned fun. It was not planned. We just hopped in the car and drove. These are all locations we just came about, never having been there before.

Honestly, 2 of these girls are my own. As a family we had a tough start to the summer and I really just wanted to get the girls out for some fun with friends. I hadn’t been able to get out and shoot for several months and it was also a time for me to “warm-up” before senior season began.”

Modern Teen Style…..Tara Rochelle Photography

Wow. This session is absolutely stunning. Tara from Tara Rochelle Photography created these stunning images for a client to share with modeling agencies.

Tara explains, “This session was intended for Ella, an aspiring model, to build her portfolio and take to potential agencies. She was told in the past that her look was “too young”. We started off with a young fresh look and then changed up hair and makeup to give her a more grown up look. We did the photo shoot in a hip urban area of Old Town Pasadena in California.

Modern Teen Style…..Terry Beigie Photography

Love today’s boho inspired session from Terry Beigie Photography.

Terry explains her inspiration as, “I found this top at a local boutique and fell in love with the look! I tracked down the headband and gold cuffs too, and sent out a model call for those under 16 who would be willing to do a fun session with me. I met Laura when I photographed the 8th-grade dance in May at the middle school and when she responded to the model call I was thrilled. I just knew the colors would look amazing on her!”
