Design Inspiration-Mint and Grey

This months design inspiration is inspired by something as simple as surfing the web. These items caught my eye as I’ve been drawn to the sea-foam and mint greens of summer. Pairing them with a soft, cool grey takes the feel of the palette to a nice, modern, professional feel that is perfect for a photography studio space, or, a modern teen bedroom.
In this design piece, I’ve used the cool grey as a base color. Keeping the larger pieces the neutral tone, will allow you change out the accent color should you ever get bored of it. (Not that you could ever get bored of this beautiful, soft green!) By keeping the pop of mint in the accent pieces, you also keep the space fairly gender neutral by not being too feminine or masculine. Silver metallic finishes will go great with this combo too, adding just a touch more of the modern and upscale feel of this look. I can especially imagine this color palette overlooking a window to the ocean, however, it’s sure to be the perfect fit for any space in any location. Your teens and clients (or teen clients) will feel nice and relaxed around these soothing tones!

Do you have a studio or teen bedroom that draws inspiration from summer nature? We would love to see! MTS would love to feature your space along with our inspiration boards once a month. Are you a teen or tween who is getting ready to graduate from a kid room to an awesome teen space? Share your before and afters with us and you can be featured in our monthly design inspiration post too! Just email us at info@seniorsstyleguide.com with “Studio Design” in the subject line. AND don’t forget to follow us on instagram @mdernteen for your daily dose of inspiration! We look forward to seeing your awesome spaces!

Printed T’s | Eye On Fashion | Modern Teen Style

Whether you ran a 5k or support the troops, chances are you own a printed T. But now, printed T’s have become MUCH cooler than that basic baggy t-shirt you got for going to that Bat Mitzvah last Summer – now, printed T’s are a serious fashion statement!

Printed Ts

You can find printed T’s in long sleeve, short sleeve, crop top, tank top, fitted T, over sized T, you name it! They have everything on them from funny sayings to movie quotes to band names to puns! There is literally a printed T out there for EVERYONE!

One of the best things about printed T’s is that they can help pull together an entire look just by what they have printed on them! In some cases, you can create your outfit around what you have written on your shirt. Take these country inspired shirts for example! See how Corrie Barto Photography used them to really drive home that country feel in this shoot? Love it!

Or you can get adventurous with your printed T and pair it with a show-stopper accessory; like this headdress seen in Megan Bryant Photography‘s images, below.

And oh my goodness do I swoon for a printed T and skirt combo like these ones seen in Kim J Photography’s images. The beauty of mixing a skirt with your T is that it helps completely shake up the look and add a casual twist to your outfit!
kimjohnson

The printed T is a statement piece and you can wear it 1,000 different ways.

Maybe you’re a drummer in a band and you want to show off that musician vibe you’re rocking with a grungy band T. Perhaps you think your besties are the reason for living and you want matching tanks that say “on Wednesdays we wear pink” because Mean Girls is your most favorite movie to watch together.  However you rock the printed T don’t be afraid to use it as a way to shout to the world just what you’re about!

So, what do you think? Don’t you just love how much personality each one adds to a look? Share yours with us over on the Modern Teen Style page and tell us how YOU rock your Printed T!

Fashion Flashback … Teen & Tween Lifestlye

Isn’t it so weird when an item in fashion that you thought would never circle back around, finds it’s way back into mainstream fashion? Sure, there are many items out there that I often think would be fun to bring back, but there’s also a fair share of items that I think many of us would rather not see popping up in our fashion feeds!

The 80’s introduced us to many fashion phenomenons like banana clips, jelly shoes, and a plethora of neon colored accessories. Many of these have tried to weasel their way back, but rarely find the spotlight in today’s world of fashion. However, one big timer from the 80’s is sure making a comeback in many stores today… Acid Wash Jeans. Yup. I thought we got rid of those bad boys for good, but I was wrong!

Upon coming across the first display of them at Charlotte Russe, I thought for sure this was just some crazy idea of maybe ONE go-to teen fashion store, and perhaps they were just trying to throw something “fun” out there for the crowd of the “fashionably-daring”. But after walking through the entire mall, I found similar displays in Forever 21, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Nordstroms!

For those of you who might not know what “Acid Wash Jeans” are, they’re jeans (usually blue denim) that have been put through a chemical process that strips most of the color off, leaving the jeans sort of splotchy or “marbled” looking. It gives the pants a sort of pattern, and for me, I think they look kind of “busy” and “distracting”. Of coarse, I’m picturing them in full 80’s glory, paired up with some sort of neon sweater, leather jacket, or even matching jean jacket. SO I was a little relieved to see that today’s version of acid wash jeans are being styled much more tolerably  beautifully!

I actually love these three looks (below), as they are paired with tops that instead of competing with the jeans, actually compliment them, and even tone them down a bit. Soft pink blazer and heels? YES! Hellooo acid was chic! (I never thought that could be a thing!) I think we can tell from these three samples, that keeping your top simple and classy, can take this fashion flashback piece to a much better, and much more appreciated level! So go ahead, don’t be afraid to try a pair! If you wear them with the right top and accessories, you can help make this FF a keeper!

Modern Teen Style….Alana Rae Photography

Oh, sweet summer time. When you live in the Midwest, you grow to appreciate those short, glorious months! Today’s featured session from Alana Rae Photography is quintessentially summer. The colors, the wardrobe and the light capture everything about this beautiful season!

Alana describes the session by adding, “Aliza is a gorgeous, I mean GORGEOUS young lady! Being only 15, she is a very shy girl. Getting her makeup done and being in front of my camera… it gave her so much confidence that it beamed right through her!

Aliza skipped on having a quinceñera (the celebration of a girl’s fifteenth birthday) so her mother decided to gift her a full glam makeup appointment with a local makeup artist and a session with me. We had the amazing chance in using a private property that looked over the Rio Grande River. It was such a beautiful sight! Other locations I used were a green area with pretty pink flowers to make her blue top pop and used a downtown area for her more stylish outfit. She had amazing jewelry on and she worked that hat as well!”

Eye on Fashion | Slip Into Summer

We’re half-way through summer and the temperatures are just getting hotter. So how do you keep cool while still looking fun and fabulous? The answer is easy –  wear a slip dress. Lightweight and breezy, slip dresses are a classic choice for summer dressing. They can go from day to night by adding a light blazer or a jean jacket. Here are three great looks you can start wearing now.

Basic black gets a boost from classic Ray-Ban Aviators, a scarf with a pop of orange and gold braided sandals. Tres chic! Shopping info here.

I love, LOVE this blue and blush combination – the round sunglasses, tasseled scarf gold-hardware sandals are perfect for a picnic or garden party. Get this look here.

Fringe | Eye on Fashion | Modern Teen Style

If you have been following our sister brand, Senior Style Guide, for the past few months, you’ve probably seen their awesome Outfit of The Day posts on their Instagram (#SSGOOTD) – they offer some pretty fantastic wardrobe inspiration, don’t you think? This week I wanted to take a cue from SSG and focus on the same theme they’re rocking in their #OOTD posts: fringe!

Fringe

Fringe is huge for any Summer concert or festival look but it doesn’t stop there; it can be found on t-shirts, vests, jackets, necklaces, shoes, shorts,  purses – you name it! And it isn’t reserved for the Summer season, either; fringe looks can be found on everything from flip-flops to snow boots and tank tops to winter coats!

Not sure about it yet? Try incorporating some fringe in small doses – like a necklace or an amazing pair of earrings!

Fringe2

Feeling a little more daring or think you’re ready to take it up a notch? Go for an awesome pair of fringes shoes!
fringe3

If fringe is your thing then you are in LUCK – it’s a hot look that has been around for ages and doesn’t seem to be going out of style any time soon. PLUS, those who rock the fringe always seem to be ahead of the fashion curve; so, if you want to continue down your style guru path then give a fringe inspired look a try – it’s definitely where it’s at!
