Modern Teen Style….Linda Gorshein Photography

A twist on a traditional beach shoot…and I love it! This featured session from Linda Gorshein Photography captures a beautiful, coastal vibe in a unique way.

Linda adds, “Jordan wanted to do something different and fun for her Junior Model Shoot with me. Jordan grew up in Orlando and loves the action and vibe at the Downtown Disney Boardwalk, so we decided to have the photoshoot there.

Jordan is an outgoing, fun Junior in High School. Having grown up in Orlando, she spent a lot of time at the area theme parks. We wanted to capture some of those moments.”

Summer Hair Care…Teen and Tween Lifestyle

Sun, sand, beaches, swimming pools, oh my! So many awesome things about summer that unfortunately can wreak havoc on your hair. Don’t worry, we have some tips for getting the best out of your favorite deep conditioning treatments, to help keep your hair healthy despite all the “fun” of summer.

#1 Start with clean hair- I know, this sounds pretty obvious, but the cleaner the better. So be sure to start with fresh, clean hair before applying your deep conditioner.

#2 It’s all about the application- You’ll be tempted to glob it on like you do regular conditioner, but it’s best to work it in and comb it through a bit at a time. Start with the most damaged part of the hair (usually the ends) and work your way up to the scalp. Then use either a shower comb, or your fingers, to comb through and detangle the hair. This will allow the conditioner to work it’s way evenly onto each strand.

#3 Heat a Damp Towel- Try putting a damp towel in the microwave for around 15 seconds, and wrapping it around your head (like you do when you get out of the shower). This will help both the conditioner to activate, and the hair to absorb the conditioner better. Be sure to wait about 20 minutes to allow enough time for the conditioner to do it’s job.

#4 Rinsing your hair- When it’s time to rinse your hair, be careful not to rinse the conditioner completely out. It’s helpful to leave a little of it in your hair, so that it keeps working to protect your hair all day.

#5 Give your hair the day off- Yep, let that bit of conditioner you left in do it’s magic without interruption. Give your hair the day off from curling irons, product, and yes, even the pool and the sun. So be sure to choose a day when you can just chill at home!

If you’re new to the world of deep conditioning, here’s a few popular choices for 2015 to give you some suggestions on what to use. Most of these can be found online, or at your local drugstore. If you have some summertime hair tips you would like to share with us, be sure to email us at info@seniorstyleguide.com. Also, follow us on instagram @mdernteen for more fashion and beauty tips!

Modern Teen Style….Devon J Imagery

Color, color, color! I am head over heels in love with today’s featured session from Devon J Imagery. I’m constantly inspired by the teens I photograph and their drive to be individuals. This model is no different!

Devon adds, “Ainsley’s session was SO MUCH FUN! She’s about to make the transition from middle school to high school, so it was important to me to capture who she is at this particular chapter in her life! She’s SO smart, and really into books, and she’s a budding rockstar/guitar player extraordinaire. She also has a deep love for fashion, and I wanted all of those things to be apparent!

Ainsley is such a unique girl. I wanted to give her a unique session to show that off!! She doesn’t just march to the beat of her own drum…she does the drumming and has a serious dance party to it. I love her fearlessness to be exactly who she is!”

Design Inspiration…Summer Farmer’s Market

I love finding color inspiration in nature! This months design inspiration is inspired by a recent trip to the Portland Farmer’s Market. These flowers are just one of the many beautiful things I found on my summer vacation to Oregon. I was quickly drawn in by the awesome colors of the fully bloomed peony against the background of greens and bright yellow marigolds. Such a rich, delicious mix of color! Let’s see how we could use it for decorating a studio and (or) a teen/tween bedroom space!

Our palette of bold greens and pinks, bright yellow, and a touch of soft pink and minty green create quite a fun, vibrant space that is both cheery and inviting.
Try anchoring the space with one of your bold colors, and providing the larger accent pieces in the complimentary bright yellow, and the smaller accent pieces with the little pops of softer pink or green. If that’s feeling too bold for you, switch around the accent pieces and do mainly soft pink or green for the larger statement pieces, and reserve the brighter colors for little pops of color in the decor and smaller accent pieces. It’s really up to you and your preferences, but these colors are fun and playful, so you really can’t go wrong any way you mix them up!

Do you have a studio or teen bedroom that draws inspiration from summer nature? We would love to see! MTS would love to feature your space along with our inspiration boards once a month. Are you a teen or tween who is getting ready to graduate from a kid room to an awesome teen space? Share your before and afters with us and you can be featured in our monthly design inspiration post too! Just email us at info@seniorsstyleguide.com with “Studio Design” in the subject line. AND don’t forget to follow us on instagram @mdernteen for your daily dose of inspiration! We look forward to seeing your awesome spaces!

Modern Teen Style….Megan Evans Photography

I adore contrasting wardrobes and locations. It really draws the viewer in to the image in an unexpected and interesting way. Today’s featured session from Megan Evans Photography creates this contrast beautifully.

Megan explains, “We shot at the Newlin Grist Mill which was just the perfect location. It was 3:30 in the afternoon so the light wasn’t ideal because it was super bright – but the overhang on the side of the building gave us the perfect amount of shade. The red barn wood and the stone wall both provided great backdrops and the glittery dress really popped against them.

My niece is a junior at Garnet Valley High School in Glen Mills, PA. My sister sent me a cell phone picture of my niece in her junior prom dress and as soon as I saw it I knew I had to do a session with her wearing it. She borrowed the dress from a friend and it fits her like a glove. It’s very old Hollywood glamour and the back is very dramatic.”2015-04-14_0009

Duster…WHAT?! | Eye on Fashion | Modern Teen Style

You’re never going to believe what today’s Eye on Fashion post is all about: the Duster.

The what?!

The duster 😉

It may be fashion inspiration all the way from the 1920s, but trust me when I tell you that it is making a roaring come back (get it? roaring? hehe).

The duster coat is a loose, full-length, lightweight jacket (usually designed without buttons)  that, back in the 1920s, women would wear when traveling; but, now, the duster is a full on fashion statement seen with casual looks like shorts and a t-shirt, boho looks with fringe, and even high end business wear ensembles! The duster is a very versatile add-on to almost any outfit and is one you may even already own!

duster

I have definitely had at least one or two of these in my closet in the past and am itching to have one again – they make the perfect beach wear addition and are awesome for that transition from Summer to Fall, too!

Need more inspiration for the duster coat? Check out these fashion forward teen photographers who are already incorporating them into their client sessions!

Don’t you just love how it adds to the look without completely overtaking it?! I know I sure do! So, next time you are shopping for school, Summer wardrobes, or even your session – be on the lookout for the duster coat – I am certain you will find one you can’t live without!

Tell us in the comments below if you’ve ever worn one before and what you think of it! I’d love your feedback so I can know if I’m showcasing the right items in the Eye on Fashion posts – they are written for you, after all 😉

Inspired by Pets

Ok, so they’re not exactly an accessory (although famous people often
use them as such). But, pets can sure be a fun way to make a photo
shoot extra cute and memorable! For those teens and tweens who
only have a few years left with their favorite household companions,
getting a couple snapshots with their fur babies is a must! Check out
the photos at the bottom of the post, to help get you inspired by Pets!
And here are ten little tips that might help you include them in your
own photography sessions:
1-Enlist a helper! Someone who can be in charge of bringing your pet
on set, and most importantly, taking them home after, is a must.
This way puppies and kitties don’t have to stay caged up, or get too
anxious waiting for show time.

2- Bring them in a carrier, and bring a leash (if necessary).

3-Include them in either in the very first part of your session, so you can
get them back home with your helper as soon as possible.
4-Bring a water bottle and little bowl, and don’t forget the treats! Treats
will help you bribe your pets, or at least reward them for good behavior!
5-Be sure to bring a way to clean up any messes that might occur!
Think “doggy bags”.
6-While posing, hold your pet securely and be sure to praise them and
love them to help calm them and make them feel secure.
7-Don’t expect too much out of them. Most of the time, you’ll be lucky
to get 2-3 good shots with these wiggly and often rambunctious beings!
8-Be sure to check with your photographer for any dangerous allergies!
9-Collaborate with your photographer on a pet friendly location.
10-Be authentic and enjoy the moment! Some of the best pet shots are
the ones where true love shines through!
We would love to see your sessions inspired by Pets! Email us at info@seniorstyleguide.com with the subject “session inspired by
Pets”, for a chance to be featured on the blog! We all want to ooh
and goo over you and your animal friends!

Eye on Fashion | Beach Chic

AHHH!! School’s finally out for summer and it’s time to hit the beach! One of the hottest trends in bathing suits this summer is cutouts! Set in strategic places in a one-piece suit, cutouts can add definition and contouring to any figure. I picked four suits and added coordinating hats, towels, beach bags and flip flops so you’ll be ready to hit the beach or pool all summer long!

Black is always a great choice – classic and slimming! The cutouts in this Topshop suit are so sophisticated.  I love the “Reserved” beach towel – no one will even thinking about taking your spot! Find it all here.

blackandwhiteYellow always reminds me of sun and sand. Halter tops are my personal favorite for swim wear and I love where the side ties hit in this J.Crew suit. Add a straw hat and striped sarong/towel and you’re Malibu ready! Shopping info here.

Navy is “on-trend” this season, it’s the new black! This Topshop suit has slimming side cutouts and texture for added poolside appeal! Hot pink kicks classic Navy up a notch and the striped beach hat echoes seashores of days past. Get the look here.

The last suit is totally surfer chic! This Buckle suit in gorgeous sea glass green and blue features a high waist and halter top.  Pair with a fun “trucker” hat and everyone’s favorite Haviannas flops and get ready to hang ten. Surfs-up here!

Modern Teen Style….Kailee Meyer Photography

Sweet 16 sessions. Such a fun way to mark a milestone birthday and today’s featured session from Kailee Meyer Photography proves that! From the designer cupcakes, to the balloons and backdrop; everything about this set up is on point.

Kailee adds, “This session was a promo shoot for my newest offering, Sweet 16 sessions. After deciding on the overall feel I wanted to showcase in the shoot, I announced a model call on Instagram, found supplies, and started planning!

Since this was a promo shoot for Sweet 16 sessions, I knew right away that I wanted to do a birthday theme. My inspiration for the styling was the fresh, youthful, vibe that sixteen year olds exude. That meant balloons, lots of dancing, and of course, cupcakes!”
