Here is what Linda had to say about this amazing session…

My client who was a junior in high school wanted to capture special moments with her horse at the barn where he is boarded. The barn was a beautiful setting for a photoshoot, and we enjoyed capturing many shots both inside and outside of the barn.

Introducing Modern Teen Summit

Repeat after me…2016 is the year of education.  2016 is the year of putting myself out there.  2016 is the year of achieving my goals. Not hiding behind my goals but actually trying to achieve them.

Sarah Modern Teen Summit

The industry…

I have been watching the teen market for some time now.  And one of my goals has been to put together a full day intensive educational event to better educate those who are wanting to incorporate teens and tweens into their business.  There I said it.  A perfectly bundled intensive to get you started on the right track.  I went back and forth.  Should I wait until 2017?  Should I give the industry more time?  Is this the right time?  These are all the thoughts that many in the industry have tirelessly listened to me question over the last year.  Is this the right time????  It finally took someone saying “what are you waiting for?” to get me to publicly put it out there.  Those words hit home…what was I waiting for?

The time is now…

It was a little over 4 years ago when I first started my teen line.  In my area it was unheard of.  But there was a need.  A void to be filled.  This is something I have heard from other photographers who have been running successful teen and tween programs for 10+ years.  It is a recurring theme in this industry.  Fast forward to today.  More and more photographers are discussing incorporating teens and tweens into their existing business.  They are casting them into their model crews.  This untapped market is about to explode.

I am sure the big question now remains how to utilize it?  Where do I even begin?  I truly believe we need to build this framework with the right foundation. And that is how Modern Teen Summit was born.  I selected 4 speakers who are industry leaders with experience in the teen market.  They will be teaching on how to market to teens, how to incorporate teens into a model crew, how to pose and make money in the teen market and how to do styled concepts and build your teen line. The combined experience alone of these speakers in the teen market is incredible.  This is my dream team for Modern Teen Summit.  I also knew I wanted this to be a mini version of PUSH which is why it will take place immediately after PUSH ends.  One jam packed day, a very intimate setting with a small attendee to speaker ratio.  With that said, we will be opening 20 exclusive seats on Monday for this event.  I want this to be the event that prepares you to expand or incorporate teens and tweens into your business.  I want you to think outside the nice box we have all built.  I want you to be challenged.  I believe Modern Teen Summit will be that event that makes you revisit your business and client offerings.

What to expect…

-1 full day of intensive education

-4 speakers

-20 seats

-Classroom instruction from the best in the teen and tween market

-Educational courses you can apply to your business

-Evening portfolio shoots (*weather permitting)

-teen models

-and so much more!

The Courses…

Each of our speakers is invested in helping you succeed.  They have carefully planned courses that will help you build a solid foundation for your teen business.

Teri Fode

MARKETING THE MODERN TEEN BUSINESS

They’re happy, fun, adorable and also the most forgotten demographic in our industry: the 11 to 16 year old teens! Today’s teen is tomorrow’s senior, so if you are a high school senior photographer, this group is the perfect genre to pull into your photography business. Knowing where these teens are online and understanding what captures their attention is one of the key pieces to effectively reaching them with your message. Teri will be teaching the specific marketing tips and strategies for reaching both the parents and teens including a marketing campaign that will create excitement for your brand as your grow this part of your business!

Audrey Woulard

MOLDING-THE ART OF POSING AND CREATING MARKETABLE AND SELLABLE IMAGES FROM START TO FINISH

Unlike seniors, selling teen images isn’t as easy because the concept is still relatively new. You must be knowledgable on how to pose, dictate, and create images that appeal to the tween, that appeal to the tween amongst their friends, and what sells to the parent. Audrey Woulard will walk you through how she creates posing that not only markets your business, but what will also make you money in the teen market. There is a method to the madness, and this talk will break down the how’s, and the why’s from start to finish. We will arm you with all the knowledge that will keep you relevant amongst the fleeting eyes of a teen, but will also create longevity from the person that will pay your prices…which is the parent.

HOW TO EXPAND YOUR SENIOR MODEL TEAM TO REACH A NEW CLIENTELE

Many of us either have senior model teams, or have heard of photographers that have them. We all know they can be highly successful and have many different ways of running. A model program is an extremely effective way to get huge recognition and buzz going right to your target market! But is there more?? I am going to be sharing with the attendees of Teen Summit how to use the super successful bones of a senior model program, to expand and reach your tween and teen audience! Tweens and teens are at just the right age to reap the incredible benefit of a styled photo session! The early tween and teen years are full of insecurities and comparison and this is an amazing time to be able to build the confidence of your young clients and I am so excited to show you how!

Creating Fresh Style Concepts and Growing Your Teen Market Business

Todays teens are not doing business as usual and in order to gain their trust, you need to do a lot more than get an endorsement from Justin Bieber. Workout Essentials

Well it’s done! The Holidays are officially over and it’s a whole new year! 2016 is IN! So what next? Well, if you’re one of the millions of people who make New Year’s resolutions then you’re probably getting started on what’s at the top of your list. For nearly 70% of American’s, this means getting fit and healthy. At a percentage that high, it’s safe to say that most of YOU have made this very same resolution.

So that’s great. Getting healthy and fit means feeling your best. Feeling your best means feeling better in front of the camera, or in the case of us photographers, running around behind it. Good health means more energy, and means a healthier mind. And in a round about way, it just makes everything work better.

Whatever your preferred method of exercise, from Pilates to P90X, you can still look cute doing it! Of coarse, until you get drenched in sweat. But hey, that means you worked hard so it just adds to the look, right!? While looking cute is fun, practicality is obviously important here too. I’ve put together a couple essentials for working out, that will keep you comfortable, cool, and help you get the best out of your work out. Finding the perfect colors and prints is up to you!

#1 This cute crop top caught my eye because of it’s bold colors and patterns. Bright colors and patters can energize your mood and help you to plow through your workout.

#2 A set of light weight dumbells is a must for many workouts. But when I found these CHANEL dumbells I just HAD to add them to this list! Ha!

#3 Yoga pants are probably already a part of your wardrobe because let’s admit it, they’re SO comfy. They make the perfect workout pants because they’re so easy to move around in without restricting you.

#4 It’s really important to have a good workout bra. Especially if you’re a runner or jogger. Look for ones that help keep everything in place, and ones that rate high for back support.

#5 This fun long graphic tank has that bright color that enhances mood, a fun expression (because let’s admit it, when it comes to working out, the struggle is real for most of us!) and it’s long enough to cover your yoga pants-bum!

#6 For those of you working outside a gym in cold weather, these leg warmer leggings can be worn in place of yoga pants, or underneath sweats for added warmth.

#7 Fitbits are all the rage in the health world and for good reason. They can help you keep and stay on track of your fitness goals.

#8 You might notice there are two number eights. My top two choices for workout shoes are Nike runners for those with average size feet, and New Balance’s for those like me! Most of my friends love their Nike runners, but for me, a girl with extra wide feed and high arches, I LOVE my New Balances. Every time I put them on I feel like running! (OK, well at least I feel like putting a spring in my step, ha!)

#9 A good set of ear buds that will stay put while you jog, run, or workout can be a great tool to keep you going at the pace you need.

#10 An adorable headband to help catch the sweat that would otherwise drip down into your eyes during workout. There’s a ton of super cute ones on Etsy!

resolutions

So if you’re one of the people with a fitness resolution, I wish you strength, determination, and stamina, so that you’ll keep a healthy body and mind! Good luck and keep at it!

2015 Fashion Faves

In just three short days it will officially be 2016! I don’t know about you, but this year seems to have flown by. It’s been super fun tracking the trends of 2015, and seeing how everyone pulls them into their photo sessions and every day wear. There were some definite faves from this year that I hope we’ll be seeing again in 2016. Here’s a little list of my personal top five looks of 2015, a sort of “year in review” here on Modern Teen Style.

2015 Faves

#1. The Shift Dress. We love it so much, we wrote about it twice! It’s just such a great look that can be accessorized in many different ways. It’s also a great look that fits on almost any body type! If you didn’t catch it the first time, you can read more about it here and here!

#2. Jumpers. These outfits are so fun! And who doesn’t love something you don’t have to think too much about?! No worrying about matching the right top and bottom, it’s a full outfit in one super cute piece. Megan shows you some awesome jumpers in this post here.

#3. Faux Fur. It’s just so luxurious and soft, and adds amazing texture to your outfits. Every photo shoot I see with it seems to pop off the page with added depth, and it just looks so darn rich! Check out this awesome post Sarah wrote about it!

#4. Hats. The perfect accessory for a photo shoot in my opinion! Even if you don’t love yourself in them, you can pose with them! Hats are a great way to add some fun and interest to your outfit and photo shoot, and I definitely hope I see more of them in 2016. Here are a couple adorable featured sessions that capture the great use of hats! Featured Session by Linda Gorshein and Featured Session by Mindy B.

#5. Geometric Jewelry. I know I’ve made it no secret, but I really LOVE geometric shaped jewelry! Especially triangles! It’s just so clean and modern, but can also work with the more boho looks as well. I’m really hoping we see more of it this new year. I wrote about the evolution of it here, if you didn’t read it already.

How about you? What styles do you hope to see more of in 2016!? What styles do you hope die!? Ha! I won’t go into that here…. We hope you all have a great New Years, and that you keep following us in 2016 for more awesome teen fashion trends!

Road Trip To Holiday Table | Christmas Season | Eye on Fashion

Christmas week is heeeere! Anyone else have to travel for the holiday? I know I’m not alone here, right? Check out the following for some awesome (and comfy) fashion ideas for your road trip this holiday season.  Show up in style in any of these numbers after sitting in comfort for hours in the car and you will be a true holiday success!

 1. The Off-The-Shoulder Sweater
road trip1
Off the shoulder sweaters are usually made with a knit cotton and therefore tend to be pretty comfy. Plus, the off the shoulder aspect gives it just a bit of fun so it’s not as “ho-hum” as your usual every day sweater. Add the right accessories and your favorite pair of booties and you’ll be dressed to impress the second you step out of that car!

2. The Black Leggings
road trip2

Black leggings are the ultimate in comfort when it comes to road trips but there is ONE rule you must follow if you wear them: be certain you pick a sweater or top that is long enough to cover your behind. Leggings are meant to be worn under a garment – not to replace jeans or slacks. Think of it this way: if it doesn’t have real pockets it won’t pass as real pants. That being said, leggings are the perfect road-trip-to-table outfit staple so grab a pair and your favorite over-sized sweater, throw your hair into a cute up-do with a hat or head-wrap and you’re set!

3. The Sweater Dress
road trip 3

Last but certainly not least is the ever classic and in-style sweater dress. Sweater dresses are crazy comfortable but since they are made of sweater material there’s no need to iron them or worry about getting it wrinkled. Throw on your dress with a pair of tights or even take a cue from the second point above (leggings!) and you can go from lounging in the car to talking it up with grandma around the Christmas dinner table in no time.

There you have it! Three easy ways to go from road trip to dinner table without bringing a change of clothes. Have a safe and wonderful holiday season and I’ll see you beauties in 2016!!

Christmas Wish List 2015

Christmas is in three days, ahhh! It’s come so fast! The Holiday season is all about giving and precious time spent with loved ones. But it certainly doesn’t hurt to have a little “wish list” of your own for Santa right? Here’s some awesome things we hope Santa puts in our stockings this year!

#1 Naked “Smokey” by Urban Decay – It’s Urban Decay’s newest palette and it’s sure be awesome just like their predecessors! It comes with twelve smokey neutral eye shadow shades, so you can get various smokey eye effects for just the right look you’re going for. It also comes with a detailed look-book that guides you through four different smokey-eye looks, bonus!

#2 O.P.I. All stars gift set- O.P.I. is one of the best nail polish brands out there and is used by both amateurs and professionals alike. It glides on smoothly and always has great coverage. This gift set contains some of the most popular colors all in one package!

#3 NYX Butter gloss gift set – Butter gloss glides on silky and smooth and stays shiny and luscious looking. NYX has this gift set of beautiful neutral colors perfect for just about everyone. Oh, and they smell and taste delicious too!

#4 Clinique lash-doubling mascara- This highly rated mascara is one of the best for the price. It nearly doubles the length of your lashes and thickens them for extra volume. It’s known to last a long time too!

#5 Urban Decay Score 8-hour powder blush – Another fave from Urban Decay (we just love this brand) is their 8 hour powder blush. It comes in many beautiful shades to highlight every skin tone with that perfect glow. And like it’s name says, it lasts up to eight hours!

#6 Isotoner Smart-touch gloves – These lovely warm tan gloves will not only keep your hands comfy this winter, but their adorable scalloped edge adds a fashionable flare. Also, they are smart-touch which means you can still use your touch-screens with them on!

#7 iphone 6 case- Santa is probably bringing many of you the newest iphone right? Well be sure to dress them up with some super cute cases! We love this beautiful floral print case from Dillards.

#8 Geometric gold earrings – Santa can’t go wrong with jewelry, and we love anything triangular this year. Earrings, bracelets, necklaces… you just can’t go wrong with the modern geometric-shaped jewelry!

#9 Cable knit Slouch/Beret- Cable knit is in and a slouch/beret in it is extra awesome. We love this cream one from Free People!

#10 Free People Carrera-Heeled Boot – Ok, so maybe they can’t fit in a stocking, but Santa can try right? These swoon-worthly basket weave boots from Free People are too awesome to not dream about, we had to put them on our list!

Christmas wishlist

We sure hope “Santa” brings you everything on your wishlist this year! Enjoy time with your loved ones, and have a safe, wonderful Holiday season!

Velvet Crush

One clothing fabric that always reminds me of Christmas is velvet. I’m not sure if it’s because Santa’s suit always seems to have that velvety feel, or if it’s the velvet stockings we picked out years ago that still hang on the fireplace every holiday season. Or maybe it’s all the little red and green velvet Christmas dresses we were forced to wear as children, for pictures in front of the Christmas tree and on Santa’s lap. All of these things combined make velvet stand out in my head and scream “Christmas Time” for sure.

Well, velvet is making a comeback. And not just for Christmas, but for all of fall and winter 2015! This luxurious, rich-looking fabric isn’t just for Holiday formal wear anymore! Some of this years trends in velvet feature short dresses, pants, tops, hand bags, and even shoes.

Velvet
velvet pants

The secret to wearing velvet casually is to balance it out with another texture. Leather, denim, and suede all look great paired with velvet and add to the luxurious feel. If you’re not quite feeling brave enough to pull off a velvet look yet, try starting out by adding a velvet purse or hat to your outfit, then work your way up once you find you fall in love with it.

Red velvet
Green Velvet

One of my favorite velvet looks is the velvet jacket. Swoon! It’s a great look for street style when you pair it up with some funky shorts with tights, a hat, and boots. But it can also be a really chic look over nice jeans or dress pants.

Velvet Crush

Or, you can go old school and wear velvet in a formal setting too. It’s still a beautiful fabric for formal wear, which bears a classic, old film style feel.

However you choose to wear it, we want to see! Share your velvet outfits with us on Instagram @mdernteen and use the hashtags #velvetcrush #modernteenstyle. We hope you all have a happy holiday season, and be sure to check back each day here and on Instagram for more awesome style tips!

Faux Fur | Eye on Fashion

The title says it all, really: faux fur is IN and it is picking up speed FAST this season!

Faux fur can be seen on slippers, jackets, sweaters, you name it! But in today’s Eye on Fashion post I am going to focus on the faux fur vest!

fur vest

To be honest, I wasn’t certain this trend was going to last an entire season; but it has exploded on to the scene and is here to stay – so definitely don’t miss out if this is your style! The faux fur vest is such a neat and unique addition to any closet and can really take an every day outfit into the fashion icon realm.
fur vest2

You can wear it with skirts, dresses, pants, jumpers – pretty much anything. Take a pair of skinny jeans, booties, and a long sleeve T and throw on a faux fur vest and you are literally good to go from day to night! And oh my goodness, add a hat or a killer necklace and you will be ahead of your fashion game!

Plus, for Winter time, the faux fur vest is an amazing addition to your wardrobe since it adds that extra layer of warmth without being too bulky! Definitely a plus in my book!

As I mentioned, I wasn’t certain this trend was going to really take off in the fashion scene until a little while ago, so if you already have a faux fur vest then consider yourself a fashion trendsetter – because these vests are IN and they are flying off the racks!

Fashion Flashback – Geometric Jewelry

Over the past two years the trend of geometric jewelry hasn’t seemed to slow down. The bold lines of the triangle seem to be the most popular as they are timelessly elegant yet edgy, working an outfit with both style and meaning.

This trend, however, is not new. Geometric shaped jewelry is as old as Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt. Having thought to carry magical powers, certain shapes were considered sacred and worn for healing, balance, and protection.

Greece & Egypt

Another culture known for their use of these shapes were the Anasazi Native Americans, who donned beautiful Geometric patterns in their art, pottery, basket weaving, and jewelry.  Many of today’s tribal prints are a nod to designs from this beautifully artistic culture.

Anasazi

It wasn’t until the mid 1930’s that a more modern take on geometric jewelry began to emerge. It was the birth of what was considered “Modernist Jewelers” who, much ahead of their time, began to craft chunky, one of a kind pieces that wouldn’t really catch on for a few decades.

Modernist

The dawn of the 1960’s “Mod Era” was all about eccentric bold patterns and shapes, and focused primarily on squares and circles in bright colors. A couple decades later, the 80’s would introduce their take on geometric jewelry by producing pieces in primary, or neon colors, in different types of plastic and enamel materials.
Mod Jewelry
1980's Geometric

If you haven’t noticed by now, SO many fashions of the early and mid 1990’s have made their way back in today’s fashion world. The geometric jewelry pieces of the 90’s are no exception. Ditching the 80’s affinity for plastic and neon, the 90’s, like today, was more about brushed metallics and paying homage to the raw artisan looks of the Ancient times.

1990's Geometric Jewelry

Today, we’ve changed it up to shiny metals, and adapted a more clean, modern look that gives a nod to both old and new.

Geometric Jewelry

I personally love this look and am drawn particularly to the triangular shaped pieces that many are wearing this season. Perhaps it’s the supposed “infinity” meaning of the triangle that keeps it’s presence in fashion century after century. Whatever it is, it’s been fun to see the many different ways it, and other geometric shapes, have made their way into fashion throughout time!
