Eye on Fashion | Pretty in Peony

I’m taking inspiration for this week’s post from a picture I snapped over the weekend. I was doing a studio shoot and my sweet friend brought some peonies from her garden. I handed them to one of my models and said, “Hold them like this.” My awesome make-up artist Valerie Hammer immediately said, “WAIT! Let me match her lip color to the flowers.” The bold lip color played nicely off of  her big, soft curls courtesy of The Mane Affairs and when I saw the image, I fell in love. While Valerie used a mix of two colors from a Inglot’s Freedom Lip Palette (not sold in stores) you can get close to those peony lips with MAC’s Candy Yum Yum Lipstick  seen in the grouping below.

So in honor of spring, and peonies and hot pink, I’ve pulled together a collection of accessories that makes it easy to add this wonderful, happy color into any outfit. For me this bright pink (dare we call it fuchsia?) is just about as much fun you can have with color in an outfit. The opposite of romantic, soft, pale pink, this color screams fun, sassy and flirty. Find these accessories here.

And because the peony is blooming right now but doesn’t stay around for long, I’ve got some ideas for how you can have these beautiful blooms with you all year long. Either on a mug or your cell phone case, these peonies will bring you warmth and happiness long after the real ones have bloomed out. Find these items here. peony

Hope you’ve enjoyed my flowery post this week!!

Modern Teen Style….Devon J Imagery

Today’s featured session is compliments of the incredibly talented Devon J Imagery! A truly gorgeous sister session. Devon did a great job capturing the personality of these sisters.

Devon adds, “Mollie and Josie are sisters, and juniors at Paschal High School in Ft. Worth, Texas. They’re 14 months apart, but are in the same grade! Such fun! They drove a couple of hours for this shoot, so I wanted to give them a super fun sister experience that they would remember forever!! We had gotten snowed out once before with all this crazy pre-spring weather that we’ve been having, but our shoot day couldn’t have been more perfect. We had perfect little breezes and gorgeous sunshine!

I wanted to highlight the sisters’ personal styles, while keeping their looks cohesive. I think that even though girls are sisters, it’s important to see their individuality and really focus in on their uniqueness!”

Inspired by Sunglasses

Can you believe it’s already Memorial Day this weekend?! Summer is almost here and that means sunglasses season is upon us! For some, this accessory is really a necessity. Helping to protect eyes from the glare of the blazing summer sun. But for those style conscious folks, they can also be a great way to make a fashion statement. Over the decades sunglasses have become more fashionable with not only the reinvention of new sizes and shapes, but also with how they’re worn in the fashion industry. They continue to make many appearances throughout magazine editorials and always manage to elevate the level of visual interest by making the models look extra chic and just plain cool.
When wearing sunglasses as a necessity, well, there’s really no wrong way. However, in the fashion world you’ll notice that certain sunglasses compliment different clothing styles better than others. Here’s just a few samples of what’s trending this summer in the world of sunglasses.

Round Sunglasses- Also dubbed “The John Lennons” for making their mark in history by being worn by the famous Beatles singer in the 70’s, are making a big comeback this summer with the continually popular “boho” trends. A fringed silk kimono, cut off shorts and crop top are the most popular way to wear this style of sunglasses. Pair it with a flower crown for a “straight from the 70’s” look.

The Cat Eye- These guys have been making their mark in fashion for long time. There’s something a little vintage feeling about cat-eye glasses, and it’s a given that they suit those retro style dresses and outfits. They also look super cute with anything nautical and are a popular style for sunbathers along the beach.

The Aviators- Having been originally developed by Ray-Ban to protect the eyes of pilots, this style of sunglasses eventually found it’s way over the fashion industry and remain a statement piece. They’re practical and perfect for those really sunny days, with their extra large reflective lenses. But their shiny surface and large shape are sure to catch attention when worn. These are a great way to add interest to a casual outfit. Scroll through the candid celebrity photos in any magazine and you’re sure to find at least a few shots of this exact look.

The Wayfarers- The most popular and diverse sunglasses style (can be worn by virtually anyone). Aside from taking a brief hiatus from popularity in the 70’s, these bad boys have been popular since their birth in the 50’s. Style icons like Audrey Hepburn and John F Kennedy helped to boost their popularity, and they’ve continued to be a favorite ever since. While this style can pretty much be worn with anything, modern day hipsters are enjoying them with hats, as well as other popular fashion pieces this summer.

It’s so awesome that such a little accessory that came out of necessity, can make such an impact in the world of fashion! Now go pair up your sunglasses with your fashion pieces and share your photos with us on Instagram by tagging @mdernteen. While you’re there, be sure to check out our “What to Wear Wednesday” tomorrow for some awesome, fresh fashion looks! And Happy Memorial Day from all of us at Modern Teen Style!

The Summer Sweatshirt | Eye on Fashion | Modern Teen Style

School is ending, Summer is on its way and with that come the long days by the pool and cool nights by the Summer bon fires !

Who doesn’t love being outside, under the stars, chatting it up with their besties about the latest Summer drama while all comfy cozy in a cute pull over and shorts? Sweatshirts, shorts, and flip-flops are like a Summer night uniform, ammiright?! That’s why I’m going to show you the top three ways to rock that Summer sweatshirt while maintaining your sense of amazing style (and not looking like you rolled out of bed from a late afternoon nap).

First and foremost, remember that sweatshirts already make your outfit casual – so be careful to pair it with clean, structured pieces and/or accessories to bring it back up from “slouchy/sloppy” to “stylish/cute.”

summersweatshirt1

Pair it with jeans, a cute pair of capris, or even a bright colored pair of shorts – whichever bottoms you choose, make sure they fit you well and pull the outfit together in a positive way (this means no sweatpants or yoga pants). Sure, sweats and yoga pants are fab and perfect for when you just don’t feel like getting dressed – but if your goal is to head to the bon fire or out for ice cream looking comfy AND cute, steer clear of coupling your sweatshirt with super loose fitting or overly casual bottoms.

2. Summer Sweatshirts Don’t Have To Be Two Sizes Too Big

Sweatshirts now come in so many sizes and styles that the days of your dad’s HUGE old college sweatshirt are over (although, there is definitely a time and place for those so don’t throw it away!).

summersweatshirt3

They come in short sleeve, long sleeve, crop top, zip up, hood, no hood, t-shirt style, off the shoulder, pull-over, and on and on. There are a TON of options out there for sweatshirts now so don’t limit yourself to the big slouchy have-to-roll-the-sleeves-up-3-times-just-to-get-your-hand-out-of-the-sleeve kind 😉

3. Have Fun With Your Sweatshirt

Being casual doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your personality or your style. Use your sweatshirt as a way to speak to who you are: choose one with a funky pattern or a funny saying! Or maybe a bright bold, wild color is more your thing! Pair it with a skirt and converse sneaks to show your eclectic side. Try it with floral print shorts to really add some pizzazz to your look. However you wear your sweatshirt – whichever style you choose – don’t ever be afraid to ROCK it, girl!

So, you’re all set for your next Summer bon fire, right? Take a selfie at your next one and share it with us over on the Modern Teen Style Facebook page! Can’t wait to see how you style your Summer sweatshirt!

In love and fashion,
Sarah

Modern Teen Style…Stephanie Monique Photography

I always find that winter sessions are much more fun and inspiring to look at in the summer. That may be because I live in the northern part of the country where winter lasts for months on end. So I’m excited to share today’s featured session from Stephanie Monique Photography.

Stephanie describes the session, “This session takes place 20 minutes south of Flagstaff, AZ. Kelsey, 16, a junior from Shadow Ridge High School in Surprise, AZ is the beauty shown in the pictures. Coming from the Phoenix area, 30 degree weather was very cold! There was hardly any snow left, but we managed to find some patches with a little bit left. Kelsey looked absolutely stunning in her long blue dress. She also wore her red winter coat that really popped in the images. It was a really fun session and something I had never done before. I am very happy with the way the images turned out.

Me and my HMUA are always looking for new concepts to tackle that are different from our regular senior sessions. We wanted to glam up our teens and take them to the snow. We live in the Phoenix are and were getting a little bored with the desert scene. I wanted something really glamorous. The snow and a beautiful gown go very well together. It’s not every day we get to do a shoot in the snow, so we made the most of it by doing a winter casual look as well. ”

Design Inspiration … Bold Black & Yellow

For this months “Design Inspiration” post, I am going with some bold, masculine colors for all the guys out there. I figured after two posts of pastels, it was time to shake it up a bit! The purpose of these “Design Inspiration” posts, are to bring branding and studio design inspiration to our photographer readers out there, and to also give some ideas to our tween and teen audience who might be looking to transform their “kid rooms” into something more tween/teen friendly.
For this segment, I chose black and yellow for it’s masculine feel. These particular colors are classically complimentary, but feel fresh and modern, especially when presented in bold geometric patterns.
What’s great about this color combination, is that it’s really easy to find pieces to decorate with. Just start out with black or white furniture pieces and add in pops of yellow decor, throw pillows, or a rug, to create this modern look.
This palette provides a clean, contemporary edge and is sure to give any studio that “high-end” professional feel that would work great for not only a teen and senior photography business, but any type of office setting.
The teen room decked out in this color scheme is sure to give off a mature and stylish vibe, and the decor could last well into the adult years.
If the black and yellow feel a little too bold, you can add some white or grey in the mix to mellow it out a bit, and create some layers and depth.
Black and yellow is sure to make a statement in any space. If you have used this palette as inspiration for your own studio or teen bedroom design, we would love to see! MTS would love to feature your space along with our inspiration boards once a month. Are you a teen or tween who is getting ready to graduate from a kid room to an awesome teen space? Share your before and afters with us and you can be featured in our monthly design inspiration post too! Just email us at info@seniorsstyleguide.com with “Studio Design” in the subject line. AND don’t forget to follow us on instagram @mdernteen for your daily dose of inspiration! We look forward to seeing your awesome spaces!black&yellowinspiration

Eye on Fashion | Jump to It!

I’m shooting a wedding this weekend I wanted something functional, comfortable and stylish to wear – enter the jumpsuit. Easier to move in than a dress and more forgiving around the middle than a pair of pants and a top. There are so many options for styles – strapless, halter, sleeveless – as well as colors and patterns. Every store has them so it won’t be hard to find one that fits your style. I love the idea of the jumpsuit as an alternative to a dress for evening events. Think about how much more dancing you can do without the worry of wearing a dress!! Accessorize with a tassel necklace and some big hoop earrings and you’re good to go! These jumpsuits can be found here.

jumpsuit

For daytime, try a shorts jumpsuit. Perfect for a picnic or an afternoon of shopping – these jumpsuits are versatile and of course, comfortable. Patterns abound in florals and tribal prints, as well as stunning solids – love that electric blue! Strappy sandals are perfect for showing off those tanned legs and making them look even longer. Shorts jumpsuits can be found here.

As soon as I get a great picture of me in my new jumpsuit I’ll be sure to share.

Modern Teen Style…Lindsay Borg Photography

Oh, what I would do to have this young lady’s hair. So beautiful! And of course, this is a little throw back to my favorite season…fall! There’s nothing better than that gorgeous, warm light and the colors that fall brings. Today’s feature is courtesy of the talented Lindsay Borg Photography.

Lindsay adds, “This session takes place in a park. We don’t see a lot of the “fall season” here in Arizona. I feel like these images represent our best version of it!

My model, Sara, is beautiful…obviously! But we share a mutual love for this time of year. Both of us are Arizona natives, so we try to spend as much time outside as possible in the cold months. (Even though our cold is just chilly)”

Inspired by Cinco de Mayo

It’s Cinco de Mayo! Today, many will celebrate their Mexican heritage by taking part in the traditional festivities of music, food, and fun! Even if you have no Mexican ancestry, it can be fun to get in on the action! I mean, who would turn down delicious Mexican food, music that makes your hips move, and an excuse to wear bright, bold, fun colors?!

Obviously, today’s post is inspired by Cindo de Mayo! Don’t worry, we’re not going to highlight traditional sombreros or ponchos. Instead, we are highlighting the bold colors and the boho-feel of the traditional Mexican embroidery! Not only are the colors and patterns cheery enough to withstand a full day of celebrating, but the fabrics are comfortable and light, making them the perfect choice for a day out in the sun.

If you’re wanting to take your outfit up a notch in true celebration of Mexican fashion, try taking some inspiration from Mexican art or artists such as the legendary Frida Kahlo who’s whimsical blend of color, jewelry, and flowered hair pieces still come to mind when thinking of Mexican high fashion.

Not feeling the bold colors and punchy accessories, but still want to participate in the fun? If you’ve been on top of the trends this last year, then I bet you have an Aztec printed item somewhere in your closet that would be perfect for today! And since you’re probably going to be outside, don’t forget the cute hats and shades to go with it!

If you have any Cindo de Mayo inspired shoots, or shoots celebrating a particular heritage, please share with us! Email Vicky at info@seniorstyleguide.com for a chance to have your session featured on the blog! Help us spread fashion inspiration! Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! Have a safe, fun, and of course, fashionable day!

Modern Teen Style….Linda Gorshein Photography

Today we’re featuring a session from Linda Gorshein Photography in Orlando, Florida. This session is loaded with beautiful light, perfect skin tones and great locations.

Linda adds, “I was so excited when Aleena, a high school Junior, said that she would like to be one of my spokes models! I couldn’t wait for our shoot. Aleena has a great sense of style, she even worked at a popular local boutique for quite some time. We started her session with an urban look in the heart of Winter Park. From there, we travelled to the campus of Rollins college to enjoy the beautiful architecture and gardens. We had a blast at her shoot and I can’t wait to photograph her again next year!

I was inspired by Aleena’s inner and outer beauty. I first met her at the boutique where she worked. I was so impressed with her poise and grace, not to mention how beautiful she is!”
