Neon | Eye on Fashion | Modern Teen Style

Hey there, MTS-ers!
Today we’re going 80s style! Ok, not really, but neon is making a come back and I’m going to highlight (get it…? highlight..neon.. har har) how to rock it without looking like a glow stick!

Neon is a fantastic Summer hue since it screams fun, sunny, beach weather, and usually is found in dresses, tank tops, and shorts – perfect for the Summer season! But it can also be found in beanies, scarves, and even sweaters. With neon making a huge splash on the runways and in magazines you can bet you will see more and more of it in your own town, soon!

neon1Don’t let this palette of neon options overwhelm you. Neon is meant to be the accent piece to your wardrobe; not thrown all together in a pile at once like the above collage. You would never dream of putting multiple neon pieces together in one look – I am telling you now you would not do that. Don’t do it. It will be way too bright and then you will look like a glow stick – and we’re looking to avoid that!

Allowing neon to be the PUNCH piece of your outfit is a fantastic way to stand out in the crowd and still look fashionable! Check out the way these models used neon to infuse some fun into their wardrobe. Pay attention to the way they used other, neutral colors to elevate their neon while at the same time toning down their overall look:
neon3SO, believe it or not, neon is IN and there is a fantastic way to wear it without over doing it (and without looking like your mom’s old workout tapes)!

What do you think? Will you be rocking neon this Summer?
In love and fashion,
Sarah

Modern Teen Style….Maggie Turner Photography

Color, color, color! This feature from Maggie Turner Photography is full of punchy colors, fun locations and a beautiful model. Not to mention the serious shoe game this model brings to the table! I’m drooling over those leopard print wedges.

Maggie adds, “Victoria was one of a kind! She was vibrant, outgoing, and full of life. We started her session early one Saturday morning around 7:00am for hair and makeup. After packing up our cars full of outfits, lipstick, and hairspray, we finally got to our first location! She was a natural in front of the camera as you can tell. 🙂 We had perfect spring weather and even wrapped up her session with lemonade by the lake!

The inspiration from Victoria’s session came from her family. I have all of my clients fill out a “client questionnaire” so that they can tell me a little bit about themselves before their shoot, and all she wanted was to have “happy-go-lucky”, fun, colorful, and family oriented session (which I thought was the COOLEST ever!) She grew up on the lake which inspired going to a dock that she used to have a boat on when she was younger. Her favorite color is pink which inspired us to find an awesome pink building to be the backdrop of her shabby chic pink top! (It also had this cool vintage vibe which she was totally digging!) And lastly, she kept saying how much of an outdoorsy girl she was, so we decided that going to an old farm house with tons of land would be perfect. Overall, I would say Victoria is your all American girl!”

Beautiful! Maggie did a great job of utilizing her client questionnaire to make the most out this session. How do you effectively use questionnaires to be sure you’re serving your client to the best of your ability?

Cheers everyone!

Fringe is in!! |Eye on Fashion| Modern Teen Style

It’s impossible to walk into any boutique these days and not see fringe! It’s everywhere! And with good reason. Fringe adds a little something extra and can take a vest or a kimono from great to glam. While most people associate fringe on clothing with the 70’s and the “hippie” look, you don’t have to take it that far. In fact, you can throw a fringed sweater or vest over everything from a a t-shirt and jeans to nice pants and a top and still keep your look in the 21st century. You can find these fringed fashions by clicking here.

fringe

Here are a few pictures from a teen shoot I did last weekend. I borrowed this awesome fringed sweater dress from Blush, our local boutique, and it really made the outfit. I love it paired with the edgy tank and wedges.

Another great way we are seeing fringe this season is on your feet! How fun are these sandals?  The Native American embellishments give added texture and color but even without them these sandals can update any outfit and even add a bit of whimsy. Pair them with your favorite cut-off shorts or strapless dress and you’re on-trend! Shoes can be found here. fringebootsHowever you decide to flaunt your fringe, just remember that too much of a good thing can be a fashion don’t. If you’re wearing fringe on top, you might not want to wear it on the bottom. And vice versa.

Have a great week!

Inspired by Spring Flowers … Teen & Tween Lifestyle

Is everyone enjoying the last few months of spring?! I know I sure am! Here in the desert we only have a small window of “spring time” where everything is lovely and green, and flowers are blooming. Before we know it, the temperature will soar into the 100’s and things will start to dry out and die, leaving most locations less than desirable. Needless to say, we take advantage of spring here, and photos with flowers are a huge hit among the teen and tween photo sessions. More than 75% of my own clients ask to incorporate flowers into their sessions. Flowers are a great way to add visual interest without the use of heavy props. They can add a pop of color and texture, and give a good photo a “wow” factor.

There are many ways to incorporate flowers into your session. You can wear one in your hair, or wear them in a floral crown for a touch of whimsy. Holding them can be a great way to make use of awkward or idle hands, while adding just that touch of interest to the photo. It can be pretty easy to find flowering bushes and trees to tuck your models into to create a beautiful pop of color and depth. Or if you’re lucky enough to come across one, a field of flowers is the ultimate score. These are unfortunately scarce where I’m from. But I am, however, lucky enough to have a lovely flower shop right next door to my studio! If you are wanting to incorporate flowers into your sessions, but can’t find any growing wild around your area, you might try asking a local flower shop about buying their flowers that are too old to sell, at a discounted rate. It may be something you both can benefit from.

We would love to see your sessions inspired by flowers! Email us at info@seniorstyleguide.com with the subject “session inspired by flowers”, for a chance to be featured on the blog! If flowers are your thing, you should also check out these beautiful floral inspired fashion ideas over at Senior Style Guide! I hope you’ve been inspired today! Now go find some flowers for your next session!

Modern Teen Style……Sarah Elle Photography

Be still my heart! Today’s featured session from the talented Sarah Elle Photography is a high fashion dream come true. The lighting is dreamy, the killer styling…and the feathers! Love it all.

Sarah describes the session by adding, “My amazing model, Kelly, naturally has a high fashion, couture look to her so when designing this session we thought: what better way to play up her features then to put her in a designer gown by Nha Khahn! And, since couture fashion is all about pushing things to the edge and thinking outside the box, we opted to incorporate feathers into her shoot for a playful, whimsical feel.”

Midi Skirt | Eye on Fashion| Modern Teen Style

Hey there!

Today’s Eye on Fashion post is so on trend that it’s even a new style to ME (if you can believe that). Well, let me back up: it’s not a new style, per say, but it’s a new trend and it’s definitely a new term. Today I am introducing you to the Midi Skirt!

midi1

A Midi skirt is a skirt that hits right at the calf. It is currently most popular in an a-line cut but can be found in a pencil version, as well! It’s not a mini, a knee length, or a tea length skirt; it’s the midi!

Just pop the title in to google and I promise you will come up with a TON of options to fit any style or pattern preference. It’s a fantastic transition piece since it is such a versatile length. Pair it with sandals for a beachy, Summer, look; or throw on your cutest booties as the weather cools and Fall sets in – either way, with the right pattern or color palette you can take the same midi skirt through all four seasons, if you accessorize it just right!

midi2

So, what do you think? Are you a fan of the midi? Are you more on trend than I am and you already rock one in your wardrobe? Share with us over on the Modern Teen Style page or in the comments below! I want to know: how will you wear YOUR midi?

In love and fashion,
Sarah

The Best Hairstyle For Your Dress

It’s prom season! Some of you teens out there might be getting ready to attend your Junior Prom! Or maybe even some of you younger teens have gotten asked by an upperclassmen! AND you photographers out there are probably getting excited to capture everyone all glammed up and in their awesome dresses. It’s a time in the school year many of us really enjoy!

Getting ready for prom can be exciting but a little daunting. Usually you only have a few weeks to get everything together for the big day. Finding the perfect dress, then matching it to amazing shoes, and searching for the right accessories… it can be stressful when you’re not finding what you have in mind, but so relieving when you finally do!

So it’s the big day and you’re trying to figure out what hairstyle looks best with your dress. Should you pull it up? Leave it down? Go in-between with half up and half down? The answer to that question can help be determined by the style of your dresses’ neckline. While it’s fun to be creative and try new things, or it feels better to play it safe with something you do regularly, you can really increase your “wow” factor by playing up the right hair style with your dress.

If you have a strapless, v-neck, or thin strapped gown, you might try leaving your hair completely down. Big, romantic waves are really popular right now, and can be achieved with a large barrel curling iron, or even using a straightening iron like a curling iron! Or try half up by pulling the sides back, away from your face. You can get creative by adding a braid, or small twist to it for an extra elegant look.

Hair styles for strapless and skinny strap gowns

If your gown has a high neckline, collar, or one shoulder strap, try pulling it up, or to the side. Beautiful, messy buns are trending, as well as braids this year. Pulling your hair away from your neck will help to elongate it, and show off the awesome detail on your dresses’ neckline.

I hope that helps give you some ideas to help you achieve the perfect look for your big day! We can’t wait to see photos, so be sure to tag us on Instagram @mderteen! And photographers, don’t forget to share your favorite prom photos with us on Instagram too!

Eye on Fashion – Gingham Style

Spring has officially sprung and this week’s fashion trend comes directly from picnics and backyard cookouts – gingham! First, a little history lesson about this fabric. Gingham originated in Europe and was originally striped. Eventually it became the the checkered pattern we know and love and it’s synonymous with country chic fashion. Perhaps the most famous gingham dress is Dorothy’s in The “Wizard of Oz” – who can forget that adorable blue and white checked number with the red ruby slippers?

Well we’ve got our version of that combo today with these adorable gingham dresses with red accessories. Whether black or blue and white checked, red adds the perfect punch of color to any gingham outfit. Keep it sweet and simple with a pair cork wedges, classic bag, aviators and bangles and you’re ready for anything! You can find these fashions here. ginghamredIf a dress is not your thing, go for a gingham on the bottom in a swingy skirt or a pair of shorts. Pair with your favorite top and a white denim jacket. Bright  yellow accessories add a touch of sunshine to these country inspired styles. You can find these fashions here.

No matter how you accessorize your gingham, be sure it reflects your personal sense of style and fabulousness!!

Design Inspiration…Pastel POP

Hello again! Rey here, and I’m excited to bring you my next “Design Inspiration” post today! Here I will show you how you can take inspiration from any little thing that catches your eye, and turn it into design inspiration for your studio (for you photographers out there) and your bedroom (for you tweens and teens)!
The inspiration for this Design board were some awesome Fuji Instax cameras in various pastel colors. Of course it doesn’t hurt that Easter was just a few days ago, and these spring colors are being found nearly every where you turn right now! These colors are certainly fun and quirky, and can be toned down just a bit by adding the right shade of grey to the mix.
The palette is a perfect way to tell the world you have a playful personality and would fit right in with those colorful and whimsical photography styles. Walk into a studio or bedroom decked out in these colors and how could you not smile or feel like a kid?!
What’s awesome about this color scheme is that you can change the feel of it with your accessories. Throw in a geometric print rug and it starts to take on a more modern and edgy feel. Pop in some fun art prints like pastel popsicles and you bring in that fun and whimsical feel. Or, put up some beautiful pastel floral prints to take it in a more soft and “girly” direction. Any which way you do it, these colors remain a statement piece on their own, and are sure to get lots of attention!

Are you a photographer with a beautifully designed studio space? We want to see! MTS would love to feature your space along with our inspiration boards once a month. Are you a teen or tween who is getting ready to graduate from a kid room to an awesome teen space? Share your before and afters with us and you can be featured in our monthly design inspiration post too! Just email us at info@seniorsstyleguide.com with “Studio Design” in the subject line. AND don’t forget to follow us on instagram @mdernteen for your daily dose of inspiration! We look forward to seeing your awesome spaces!

Happy designing!

*hugs* Rey

Eye on Fashion | Denim!

Five  bucks says you can’t go a week without wearing denim.
I mean, everybody owns a pair of jeans, right? They’re pretty much a wardrobe staple.

And I bet some of you even own a denim jacket or a pair of overalls (believe it or not those are making a huge comeback)! Denim comes in a slew of options: jeans (of course), shorts, dresses, jackets, tops, vests, purses, shoes, you name it! And it comes in lots of colors , too- like green, white, and even pink!

Denim

The world of denim is endless and designers know that – why would they shy away from something so popular? They don’t. And you shouldn’t either!

Try using denim to get creative with your wardrobe! Mix and match it with a leather jacket, a pretty floral pattern, or keep it classic with a country feel! However you wear your denim – know that you are in GOOD company with everyone else – because I bet, if I was really collecting that $5 that I bet everyone at the beginning of this post, that I’d be a mighty rich lady!
Who doesn’t love denim?!

What are some ways YOU can creatively incorporate denim into your next outfit?
Show us in the comments below or over on our facebook page: Modern Teen Style.
In love and fashion,
Sarah
