Modern Teen Style…Jacki Marchant

Today’s featured session comes from Jacki Marchant of J-MPhotos!

Here is what she had to say about the session:

This was a session we did recently in Logan, UT. I had hair/make-up arranged as well as a flower crown prepared. It rained horrendously at the beginning of the shoot (luckily we started out at a greenhouse). It stopped raining for a short time which gave us the opportunity to take advantage of the stunning sunset and the beautifully depressing clouds. During the last 5 pictures it began to rain again and literally started pouring by the time we ran back to our cars. It was a quick but fun and beautiful session.
Tell us about the gear used: I used my Canon 6D camera body with a mixture of my Sigma 35mm ART lens and my Canon 50mm 1.4 lens. Both, my favorite lenses.
What inspired this session: The beauty of fall and the greenery I knew we would be surrounded by in the stunning greenhouse. I wanted to showcase her beauty and style but also incorporate the outdoor scenery because she is a girl that loves being outdoors. She loves to hunt and wants to be involved with the Forest Service after she graduates from high school.

2015 Halloween Costume Ideas

It’s almost Halloween! Do you have  your costume ready yet!? I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty last minute with costumes. I usually think “I’m not going to dress up this year”, but then, in the midst of all the fun, I decide I want to participate after all. For those of you who are like me, and don’t have a costume yet, no worries! I’m going to show you a few ideas you can create with some easy to find pieces of clothing that you most likely already have hanging in your closet!

First up we have a Bandit/Robber. Stripes never go out of style, and so it’s likely most of us have at least one striped top in our wardrobe. Pair it with some black skinny jeans or leggings, boots or black tennis shoes, a beanie and some gloves, and you have the perfect outlaw get up! How easy is that?!

Bandit

Next we have an Audrey Hepburn idea. It’s a must to have a little black dress in our wardrobe. Glam it up with a tiara, long black gloves (that you can find at almost any Halloween store right now), pearls, sunglasses, and heels, and voila! You have a modern day Audrey in minutes!

Audrey Hepburn

For our third costume idea, we will use the super trendy flannel shirt. If you don’t have one of these, you can seriously find them almost anywhere right now. Pair them up with some leggings and boots, a straw hat, and a little fringe for a “straw-like” appeal, and you have a cute scarecrow!

Scarecrow

A while ago tulle skirts were all the rage. Chances are, you have one sitting in the back of your closet right now. If not, you can make your own using this tutorial. Pair it with some cute striped leggings (these can also be found at almost any Halloween store), boots, a cute black crop, and a hat for a classic witchy look.

Witch

And lastly, we have a flapper costume. Over the last two years, not only has this 20’s dress style come back, thanks to movies like “The Great Gatsby”, but they’ve also become a popular choice for occasions like Homecoming and Prom. If you happen to have one hanging in your closet, why not break it back out and dress it up with some gloves, pearls, and a cute headband for this fashionably vintage costume choice!?

Flapper

And there you have it! I hope this helps you to be creative with what you have, so you can dress up in style! Happy Halloween!

Eye on Fashion |Fashionably Warm

We are well into Fall and the leaves are changing and the days are getting shorter. But there’s awesome things about fall like pumpkins and football and finally getting to wear your cute sweaters. The dropping temperatures shouldn’t mean a dip in your fashionista status. There are some hot style trends happening right now that will keep you warm and fashion forward. And best of all, they can all be worn together!

Let’ start from the top. In the summer we have straw hats, in the fall we have wool fedoras. Functional and fashionably and they come in a variety of shapes and colors. These fedoras will give your fall festival or pumpkin patch outing that polished look. Buying information here.

A trend that we saw during the spring and summer – Aztec prints – is alive and strong in sweater form this fall. Comfy, cozy and colorful, layer these sweaters are perfect for layering. We’re even seeing a little fringe in the bottom of some of these sweaters which as you know was also a huge summer trend. Choose a simple pattern or one with a bit more color either way you’re on trend. Get yours here.

And finally, finish your fall look with a pair of the season’s hottest rubber rain boots. Short, tall, plain, or polka dot, you can’t go wrong in this fun footwear. Add some boot toppers or boots socks for some extra flair. And no, it doesn’t need to be raining. Find your pair here.

Sweater Season –

It’s officially sweater season, yay! I don’t know about you but I LOVE sweaters. They are “comfort clothes” for sure. Comfy, and still stylish if you know how to wear them right! Here’s a few different styles of sweaters with some tips on how to wear them, to maximize the style factor!

  1. Cable Knits – Cable knits are those chunky knit sweaters, knitted with larger yarn. They have big, bold knitting patterns in different “cable” type shapes ranging from simple to intricate in design. They are considered a classic garment in the fashion world, having originated at the turn of the 19th century in Ireland, and are enjoyed today by modern fashionista’s rather than fisherman. Cable Knits look great with well fitted jeans as well as skinny jeans. They also pair up really cute with skirts of all lengths. The key to successfully wearing a cable knit, is to keep your bottoms (pants or skirts) simple, so that the eye goes to the beautiful patterns of the sweater.
  2. The Over-Sized Sweater– Over-sized sweaters can be super cute and extra comfy to wear. The key to picking the right over-size sweater, is to find one that is not too bulky. A smaller knit, or lightweight yarn will help the sweater to fall just right onto your body. Pair it up with some skinny jeans, or cute leggings with boots, and it becomes that perfect comfy/fashionable duo!
  3. The Cardigan– Where would we be without our faithful friend the cardigan? This garment can be used for practical purposes like helping us to prolong our summer wardrobes by adding a layer of warmth over our outfits.  It’s also often used as an accessory, adding just the right amount of layers for the perfect “layered” look. They look great over everything from jeans and t-shirts to dresses! The key to wearing cardigan’s is picking the right length for your outfit. If you have a visible waistline on your outfit, you can get away with wearing a shorter cropped cardigan. If you’re wearing something like a shift dress, best stick with a longer length. When in doubt, go for the longer lengths. They are trending this year and look great with everything!
  4. The Sweater Dress– This comfy head-turner is a fall favorite for many. The guidelines for wearing these are much like that of the Over-Sized sweater. Find smaller knits that hang or hug the body just right. If wearing a shorter length, try pairing them up with some cute knee-length boots for coverage. Ankle boots look super cute with this look, and the right heels can dress it up just enough for an evening out. If wearing a solid color, break it up with a cute long necklace, or opt for a cowl or turtleneck design.

And there you go! I hope this helps to guide you in picking out the perfect sweaters for your season. We want to see your sweater style too! An Understated Homecoming | Eye on Fashion

Homecoming season is upon us! If you haven’t gone already you’re probably heading to a homecoming dance in the near future – and that means you probably need a homecoming dress, too! For a lot of people this is their first homecoming dance and the whole “what do I wear” question can cause a lot of anxiety. To be fair, that question causes a lot of anxiety EVERY time you go – so, I’m going to give you a few suggestions to help guide your way!

Homecoming isn’t prom but it’s still a chance to get dressed up, have hair and makeup, and dance the night away. But, for most people, homecoming is not the time to wear that full length, poofy princess gown – that gown is for prom. Instead, it’s the time for those fun, cute, bouncy short dresses that let you show off an amazing pair of shoes!

homecoming1

Not every school has the same homecoming dance dress code but the general consensus is that a short dress is the way to go. And, even more in style right now are short, black, understated dresses that have more of a “casual” vibe. I’ve been noticing this season that looking more simple and understated is really “in;” so don’t be surprised if you see some fellow dance goers in a basic, black strapless or spaghetti strap number.

homecoming2

If shimmer and gemstones are your thing, don’t worry, because those never go out of style. But, if you’re a bit more reserved and a classic simple dress is your cup of tea then you are in luck – because that is a solid contender this year at homecoming.

What will you wear to YOUR dance? Be sure to share with us in the comments below so we can see what’s trending in YOUR area!

Fall and Winter Skin Care – Teen and Tween Lifestyle

With the changing seasons comes changing skin. For many of us, our skin reacts differently in the fall and winter, than it did in the spring and summer. Many factors such as atmosphere, temperature, and climate, can cause the skin to change. Skin has a tendency to be a little drier in the winter. That crispness you feel in the air is partly because of less moisture in the air. Cooler, dry air, doesn’t supply your skin with much needed moisture. Here are some tips for taking care of your skin this Fall and Winter, so that you can maintain healthy, vibrant skin throughout the season.
1. Moisturize! Fall is the perfect time to introduce a heavier moisturizer to your skin. Night creams are a good pick for this. Be sure to apply before bed on a clean, dry face. Products with a cream base tend to moisturize better in the colder weather. Normal skin can handle the extra moisture during the cold climate. Dry skin people might want to apply a cream-base day cream as well as a night cream, as this skin type tends to soak up moisture faster and may require extra care. Oily skin still needs to moisture too! I know it sounds weird, but oily skin usually happens because the body is trying to compensate for lack of moisture. So applying a good, oil-free moisturizer is key!
2. Don’t forget the sunblock! Yep, just because you’re not soaking up that hot sun, doesn’t mean you don’t need to protect your skin. For a lighter wear, choose a physical sunscreen containing finely milled titanium oxide for everyday wear in the fall.
3. Exfoliate! Exfoliation might be something you think of only for summer, but it’s also important to maintain radiant skin in the Fall and Winter seasons. Be sure to choose scrubs that are kind to dry skin. Oil-based sugar scrubs are great for hands, feet and elbows that tend to get extra dry in colder weather. For dry, cracked lips, try mixing a teaspoon of white sugar with a teaspoon of coconut or olive oil, and “scrubbing” the lips. It will help remove dead skin cells, and add much needed moisture to the lips, keeping them looking beautiful for the season.

Fall Color Inspiration – Reflecting Pond

Here in my little Southern NV town, fall has FINALLY arrived! That familiar crispness in the air is making me nostalgic for the holidays! And just as I’ve predicted, my last round of portrait consultations have been centered around lots of layers and beautiful fall colors. It’s been fun showing my clients the Pantone 2015 Fall color collection. If you haven’t seen the full collection yet, check out this awesome post where Sarah Elle covers the reveal of the latest color palette from Pantone.

There are so many beautiful fall colors trending this year, and they are quite complimentary with each other. “Oak Bluff”, a beautiful tan-meets-mustard color, remains my favorite anchor color, as it seems to go with every other Pantone Fall color on the chart.  It was not only the perfect complimentary color to “Marsala” (click here to visit the post on this color combo), but I find it equally as lovely paired with my next favorite Pantone Fall color “Reflecting Pond”. Reflecting Pond is a beautiful dark blue-green that pops beautifully with the natural colors of fall.  It’s the perfect contrast to all those fall leaves we love so much this time of year. I can’t wait to wear this color myself this season, it’s a color that sure to look good on everyone! I especially can’t wait to see it on a redhead, what a great pop of color that will be!

Have you started sorting out your 2015 fall wardrobe yet? Are you implementing colors from Pantone’s 2015 Fall collection into it? Have any “Oak Bluff”, “Marsala Red”, or “Reflecting Pond” in your wardrobe? If so, we want to see what awesome combinations you’ve come up with! Fashion-Forward Fall Layers | Eye on Fashion

When you think of Fall what comes to mind?

Pumpkins (and spiced lattes), leaves, scarves, boots, Halloween, Thanksgiving, football games, hot soup, and on and on. You probably also think of awesome ways to layer your wardrobe, am I right? Let me guess: you love to put a scarf on top of a sweater on top of a tank on top of jeans with some super cute boots and maybe a hat? Me too! But there are SO many other ways to layer an outfit that are not only unique but completely fashion-forward!

Let me show you!
layers

Don’t you just love how many layering options the above looks have? And, can you believe it?! None of them even have a scarf involved! Crazy!

When putting together a more unique layered look for Fall try to push yourself out of your norm. Look for new pieces like duster coats, ponchos, long blazers, and thigh high boots. Adding tights, boots, and coats to a look are a fantastic way to layer without falling into the ho-hum of Fall wardrobes.

layers2

Check it out.
The look above is cute enough on its own with just the a-line skirt and boat neck top with adorable bow applique; but, add in a pair of tights and an awesome bomber jacket and you have a crazy fashion-forward layered look PERFECT for Fall.

Or how about this yummy pumpkin-inspired look:

I love the off-the-shoulder sweater and jeans but add in the pumpkin colored open front cardi and you are more than ready to take on the season! Spice it up with a bold leopard print heel and oh my goodness do I have closet envy!

Layering looks for Fall without falling back on to the typical scarf and sweater look is easier than it seems. Give it a shot and let me know what you come up with in the comments below!
Get out there and rock it, girl!

Fashion Flashback Featuring Duster Jackets

It’s time for another Fashion Flashback!

Depending on where you’re located in the world, you might be having a bit of a struggle with the changing of the season. I know here in the desert it’s getting a bit chilly in the late evenings and early mornings, but the days can still be upwards of 100 degrees! This can be a bit tricky with figuring out how to keep warm when going to school, but not too hot as the day warms up. One great way to extend your cooler weather wardrobe into the first part of the fall season is to wear a Duster Jacket.

Duster Jackets were first worn in the early 19 and 20th centuries as a way to protect clothing from dust while riding horseback or in wagons. Being that they were created to protect clothing rather than warm the body, they were made from light weight materials and were easy to wear and move around in.

Today, we don’t really need Dusters for the same reasons as they did back then, but like most things in fashion, Dusters are making their way back around today. Dusters made a presence this year during New York’s Fall Fashion Week. However,  it’s thanks to celebrities like Miranda Kerr, Kendall Jenner, and Selena Gomez (to name just a few), that Dusters have been brought back into the spotlight.  They can be found in many stores including PacSun, Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, and Nordstrom.

Just throw one over your outfit, and you will have a look that’s welcoming to the cooler weather, that will protect you a bit from the chilly mornings and late evenings, but also won’t be too heavy to wear or carry around in the warmer part of the day. Look below for some cute examples of how to wear Dusters, and what styles or colors that might be the right fit for you and your wardrobe.

If you have a cute Duster in your wardrobe that you are rocking this fall, be sure to share with us on Instagram @mderteen! Be sure to use the hashtags #fashionflashback & #dusterjacket. We can’t wait to see you!
