Eye on Fashion | The Suede Skirt

This week we take a look at a classic piece that is trending once again – The Suede Skirt. (Many thanks to my fellow MTS blogger Rey for giving me the idea. xoxo) I love these skirts. They’re soft, they’re cozy, they move with you and always look fantastic. Patchwork, long or mini, brown, black or grey, adding one of these classic pieces to your wardrobe and you won’t be disappointed. Top with a crisp, white shirt or a sweater and pair with high boots or booties and you’re ready for anything.

Hope you’re staying warm and chic this holiday season!!

xoxo,

Megan

The Patchwork Suede skirt reminds me of the 70’s and and Lauren Hutton and floppy hats and chunky high-heeled boots. These are so fun and add a little texture and pattern to your outfit. Shop these styles here.

Who doesn’t love a mini skirt? They make your legs look amazing and they are fantastic with high boots. I love the details on these skirts – buttons, stitching and zippers add a little bit of interest without being overpowering on a small piece. Buying info here.

I’ve always leaned toward a long skirt. Maxi skirts are some of my favorite things. These long suede skirts are perfect for a leisurely lunch or even an elegant dinner out. Classy, demure and flattering, you can’t go wrong with one of these shapes. Get yours here.

The Snood

Thanksgiving is over and winter is officially here! It’s now time to bust out all your favorite winter clothing and accessories! One of my favorite winter accessories is the snood. No, not the crocheted hair net worn in the Victorian age, but the sort of “scarf meets hood” version that’s trending this winter 2015. It resembles an infinity scarf, but is big enough to cover the whole neck, and can be stretched up over the back of the head to wear as a hood. It’s a fun, versatile piece that can look great with jeans and a sweater, or it can be just the right touch to give any outfit a bit of flair, while helping to keep you nice and warm.

Most snoods are crocheted or knitted, but they can also be made from various types of fabric as well. This year you’ll see lots of faux fur snoods making their way into the fashion world. They can be found pretty much everywhere from Forever21 to Urban Outfitters. Most snoods can be found in the range of $20, but can go up from there depending on fabric and manufacturer.

The snood would also make the perfect accessory for a winter photo shoot! With it’s versatility, you can get several different looks in your photos. A fur snood would look particularly lovely for a snowy photo shoot, adding just the right amount of winter whimsy to the set.

And guess what guys…you can wear them too! Snoods can look great and super stylish on men as well, especially the big cable knit variety!

So be sure to add a snood to your winter wardrobe this year if you haven’t already! If you’re having a winter stylized photo shoot featuring a snood, share with us! Email a couple photos to info@seniorstyleguide.com for a chance to be featured on the blog! And in the meantime, be sure to follow us on Instagram for a daily dose of fashion @mdernteen.

Pajama Fashion | PJ Party | Eye on Fashion

The holidays have arrived ( I mean – Thanksgiving IS tomorrow for goodness sake!) and with that comes lots of awesome family time, lots of yummy foods, lots of chances to give back to your own community, and lots of opportunities for being seen in your cutest jammies (late night hot chocolate and Monopoly party, anyone?) Because one of the main points of the holidays is to spend it with your loved ones, this can mean a lot of extra people in your house – and therefore a lot of extra chances to be seen hanging out in your comfiest of outfits: your pajamas.

And because one of MY favorite outfits is my PJ’s (true story), I’ve decided to take this opportunity to chat a little about how to pick the best jammies for the holiday season!

jammies1

First off, pajamas should always be comfy! If you find yourself constantly tugging at your PJ’s or worried that you’ll be too cold while you sit around the TV with your family while you watch the Thanksgiving Day parade (my favorite part of Thanksgiving btw) – then you’re wearing the wrong jammies.

Aim for pajamas that are soft (cotton based sets are a good route to go) and designed with the human body in mind – aka: pick a set of pajamas that have room to move around. If you can’t play a round of charades or a game of twister in them, then they’re too tight.

Consider opting for your favorite T and a pair of night shorts. A classic duo that allows for comfy lounging as well as freedom to move as you do your victory dance post-win of your annual family board game challenge (don’t act like you don’t have a victory dance).
jammies2

If you’re like me, though, you get cold pretty easily – and you’re not always in charge of the thermostat either – so nixing the night shorts and swapping them for a pair of flannel PJ pants is a solid choice.

You can get the same level of comfort and move-ability with an added touch of warmth!
jammies3

*SIDENOTE* Don’t fear a tapered leg on your PJ pants – it’s a legit style in the pajama world and totally ups the warmth level. Tapered PJ pants is like a free pass in the fashion world  – but nowhere else. Don’t let me catch you in tapered pants in any other form. MMkay?

Another sleepwear option is the classic night shirt.
jammies5

I want to caution you about night shirts though since they do not have bottoms to them. Because of this, you run the risk of being limited in your movement (and more importantly, you run the risk of accidentally showing your undies to your Aunt Susie when you get up from the couch). To up the move-ability status of your night shirt, be sure to pick one that stops below the knee. OR , simply opt for a pair of shorts underneath and call it a day!

I hope you all have a great and warm Thanksgiving filled with your most favorite people. And remember that thing I mentioned at the beginning of the post about the holiday season offering a lot of opportunities to give back to your community? Try brain storming one or two things that you and your family can do this season for someone else. I bet giving back will make you feel as warm and fuzzy as your favorite PJ’s!

Inspired by Thanksgiving

So it’s Thanksgiving in just two days and I thought it would be fun to do a little “Inspired By” feature that plays off of the classically depicted fashion from the illustrations of what the world knows as the “Pilgrims and Indian’s” from the first Thanksgiving.

Black, or dark blue dresses with white collars, oxford-type shoes, and wide brimmed hats seemed to be key elements in the styles of early settler’s known as “Pilgrims” of the early 1600’s. Today, we can still find collared swing dresses in the same tones as the old days, and even in prestigious collections from designers like Valentino! Paired with a modern pair of low oxfords, knee socks for some spunk, and a fun, stylish wide brimmed black hat, and you’ll be ready for a Thanksgiving feast in true “Pilgrim” fashion!

For the Native American “Indian” style, you can pretty much find something in any store these days. Many of the items inspired by this style are making their way into the current Boho trend. Adorable suede skirts with or without fringe, fringe boots or moccasins, headbands, and feathers, are just a few items making a huge appearance in today’s fashion world. Top it off with some beautiful turquoise jewelry and you’ve got not only a look you can get away with for photos, but also one that would look super cute at Thanksgiving dinner!

I think it would be super fun to plan a Thanksgiving dinner where the guests dressed as a modern take on “Pilgrims & Indians”, dont’ you?! Are you planning on dressing up for Thanksgiving? Did you plan something special for the occasion? We would love to see! Tag us @mdernteen on Instagram and share your #thanksgivingteenfashion with us! We hope you get to enjoy your holiday with all of the people you love the most! And from all of us here at Modern Teen, Happy Thanksgiving 2015!

Eye on Fashion | Winter White

Who says you can’t wear white after Labor Day? Not this girl! Who doesn’t love a chunky white cable knit sweater or a crisp pair of white wool pants? After all, snow is white!! Here are some winter whites basics to help you get your winter white on!

xoxo,

Megan

Top your jeans and boots with a cozy, warm white sweater. These sweaters would also look great on top of a mini-skirt and tights. Cable knit, patterned, turtle or cowl neck, you’ll have a fresh look for a winter day. Buying info here.

I’ve always been a fan of winter white pants. I have a pair that I wear with a fitted black sweater and black boots. It’s a sleek, crisp look. A red top would also look great and be perfect for a holiday party. Accessorize with gold or silver jewelry. Find your perfect pair here.

Fashion Flashback – Denim & Chambray Shirts

I’m not sure these items qualify as a “flashback” since they’ve never really gone out of style! Chambray was developed in France in the late 1500’s, but didn’t find mainstream popularity until the early 1900’s when it was adopted by the U.S. Navy. It was here that this look made it’s first real appearance in the U.S. and has pretty much been worn in everyday fashion ever since.

Chambray and denim are actually two different fabrics. Chambray is a lightweight woven fabric, usually cotton, made of colored thread and complemented by bleached horizontal yarns. Traditionally, it tends to be indigo or light blue in color. It’s made to resemble denim, but is a lot lighter in weight and texture.

Today, you can find both denim and chambray shirts in pretty much every store. They’ve made a lasting impression in the fashion world, and haven’t ever lost their charm. They make a great addition to any fall and winter wardrobe, and that’s why we’re highlighting them today. Below are a few ways to wear them fashionably for fall and winter 2015.

  1. Pair a light colored top with a darker colored denim bottom. Or vice versa! Denim compliments denim, especially if you get them far enough apart in color. If you pair them too closely, they’ll just look like you tried to match and failed, so be careful! They also look great paired with black jeans, or leggings (if the shirt is on the longer side). In the spring, they look great with white denim jeans too!
  2. Wear them with a skirt! Though traditionally worn with pants, these tops are adorable with skirts of pretty much any length and style!
  3. Wear them like a cardigan! Wear them over a printed shirt, unbuttoned, as a layered option. Or even over a dress!

I hope this helps you to get the most out of the denim or chambray shirt! If you have found another fashionable way to wear them, and you would like to share with us, tag us on instagram @mdernteen, so we can see! And be sure to check back every day on Facebook, Instagram, and here on the blog for more fashion forward advice!

Shift Dress | Eye on Fashion

First and foremost I want to take a moment to offer my deepest thanks and gratitude to the men and women who have served and/or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. As a military family myself I understand first hand some of the sacrifices that are made to defend this country, and I cannot thank each and every one of you enough for all that you do or did for the United States.
A very happy Veterans Day to you all!

******

In today’s Eye on Fashion post I’ve got a great little wardrobe staple PERFECT for all body types – and especially perfect for those with hips!

The shift dress!
Shift Dress

The silhouette of this dress is great for so many occasions – take it to work, wear it to school, throw it on for a lunch date, or accessorize it for Sunday church – it’s perfect no matter where you take it. And even better? It’s so forgiving on all body shapes that even if you’re having an “I’m really not feeling like wearing anything but sweatpants” kind of day, this style of dress will make you feel like you left the sweatpants on but enable you to LOOK like you tried!

But don’t get this style confused with a “sheath” dress – those are two different cuts and fit two different ways.

A sheath dress is cut with a narrow silhouette and is intended to be more of a body-hugging style (with the hips and bust portion being about the same width across). A shift dress, however, is much more forgiving and is intentionally designed with a wider bottom portion in order to allow the fabric to “shift” while you walk.

So, if you’re like me and have wider hips than your bust line this is a great choice for you!
Super chic, super cute, and super comfy. Does it get any better?

Inspired by Adele

There’s always a lot of exciting things happening in the music world, and if you’ve been following along with our “Inspired By” posts, then you know that music and fashion pretty much go hand in hand. Artists in the music world often lead the way into new fashion trends by either being personally styled by the biggest names in the fashion world, or starting new trends themselves. So you know when you see someone big in the spotlight, they’re most likely taking a cue from whatever the hottest trends in the fashion world are at the moment.

With Adele currently making a big comeback, due to her new hit single “Hello” from her brand new album due to release later this month, I thought it would be fun to see what not only her current fashion choices are looking like, but how she was styled for the video of “Hello” (the song that pretty much everyone can’t get out of their heads right now!)

Not only does it seem the video perfectly invokes the entire feeling of fall just in time for a fall release of the song, but Adele is bold enough to pull off several of this fall’s fashion trends all in one outfit! If you remember this post about this fall’s most popular fashion trends, then you’ll see that Adele has pulled the three biggest looks of the season together into one lovely, cohesive number! It takes a brave fashionista to do this combination of plaid, floral, and fur all at one time, but of coarse, this is Adele we’re talking about, and she totally rocks it!

If there’s one thing we know about Adele, it’s that she isn’t afraid to be who she is. She is bold, beautiful, humble, yet unapologetic for what she stands for. I love that her spirit carries over into her fashion choices! Her long, shaggy, faux-fur coat that she wears in the video adds the perfect amount of “rockstar” to her cute plaid shirt-dress layered over black leggings. A multi-patterned floral scarf is added as the final layer for just the right touch of whimsy, completing the perfect trifecta of fall fashion. And that’s why we’re “Inspired By” Adele this month!

We love how music inspires art and creativity, and even a healthy mind! The bloggers of Modern Teen Style, as well as myself, want to see your sessions that have been inspired by music, movies, books, or art!

Eye on Fashion | Couture Coats

As I was getting ready to go out the other night I realized I didn’t have a nice coat to go over my nice outfit. All I had were Old Navy quilted parkas and the like. It’s such a shame to cover up a great outfit with a less than fabulous coat so I thought I do a little research and see what we’re wearing this season. I might even head out today and get a new coat for myself. Hope these help you step-up your winter fashion game!

There’s no reason your coat should be bulky and ill-fitting – how is that stylish? Opt for a belted wool trench in a classic pattern like hounds tooth or plaid. Black and white is a great choice as well because it will go with everything you wear. Top with a floppy wool hat and add some red gloves for a splash of color and you’re ready to go. Buying info here.

Belted

If you’re looking for a coat with a little more edge, try one that has a little more bling like buttons and zippers. Big, wide collars also add personality to a belted trench. Personally, I always loved a double-breasted Navy pea coat. Those anchor buttons were to die for. Top your fab coat with a red beret and some slip on some black leather gloves for a sleek finish. Get this look here.

Be Inspired By…. | Sabrina Carpenter | Eye on Fashion

Last month we brought you a “Be Inspired By…” for the oh-so-adorable Rowan Blanchard, the lead in the hit Disney series Girl Meets World. This month we’re bringing you inspiration from the decidedly edgier half of the hit show’s celebrity duo, her co-star Sabrina Carpenter!

sabrina carpenter

Sabrina is two years Rowan’s senior and it definitely shows in her fashion choices. High heels, leather pieces, short suits, and ripped clothing. Sabrina still manages to look great and presentable in almost all of her looks (except for maybe the ripped jeans and pink flamingo number above… I’ve decided that one is her Saturday afternoon grocery store outfit.) and that is why she is worth being inspired by for your fashion choices!

Want to have an edgier feel to your fashion like Sabrina? Here are a few items to add to your wardrobe to get you started:

1. Leather or Pleather Skirt
Pay close attention to the hemline of Sabrina’s style – just because it’s leather doesn’t mean it has to be short short short. Go with an above the knee leather or pleather skirt or a skater style that flares out to add the right pinch of edge without getting “the look” from grandma.
leather skirt

2. High Heels
Personally, I’m a fan of heels AND flats so for me it totally depends on what I’m wearing whether I bring out a flat or a heeled shoe – but Sabrina seems to wear high heels no matter which look she’s going for; so, to achieve an edge like Sabrina, add a heel or two to your closet. My recommendation? Start low. If you’re not used to high heels you don’t want to jump into a 3 inch heel – trust me. Nothing is more embarrassing than not being able to walk in your own shoes. Try one or one and a half inch heels to start:
Low Heel

3. Blazers
Whether she’s wearing a short suit or jeans, if you google “Sabrina Carpenter” you will see her wearing a blazer with a lot of different looks. Blazers help set her a part from the tween world and sky rocket her straight to the “young adult” teen world. Add a blazer or two in some fun colors to your wardrobe and you’ll immediately be channeling the edgier teen feel of Sabrina Carpenter!

Blazers

So there you have it. Three easy to find pieces to add to your wardrobe that immediately add an edgier feel to your look – thanks to the inspiration of Sabrina Carpenter! Which piece will you add first?
